Rebecca or Becky Downie has had a remarkable presence in the British gymnastics arena. The gymnast’s presence has brought accolades and recognition as a 2-time Olympian and a double European champion. However, it hasn’t all been a smooth sail for the 31-year-old Olympian. Over the past couple of years, the gymnast fought through a family tragedy, Olympic team omission, and despair encompassing the circumstances.
Nonetheless, in 2022, Becky overcame her battles to make a return to the sport, better and stronger. Apart from focusing on her many contests, Becaky also extended a hand to her sister Ellie to voice abusive and mental health concerns in the industry. Today, as her comeback entailed recognition and the 2024 season’s arrival brought anticipation, Becky cherished her journey with a heartfelt note.

The British gymnastics star, recently took to her Instagram stories to share a note for the year-end. The update arrived days after Becky and her sister Ellie were both appointed MBE for their gymnastics contribution. “This little one could have never imagined the life journey ahead,” Becky began with an image of her younger self. “Felt emotional for weeks knowing what an impact me and Ellie have had in the sport, and that we really have helped make gymnastics, a better place forever.”
Becky further thanked her fans for their support and for helping her through difficult times. “I can’t believe 2024 is now days away, but whatever the outcome, what a legacy to have left,” she expressed. The gymnastics sisters battle through

She further helped the nation win its first European Championships team gold medal. “For too long, the health and wellbeing of young girls has been of secondary importance to a dated, cruel, and – we’d argue – often ineffective culture within women’s gymnastics training,” the sisters added in a statement. The remark evoked a response from British Gymnastics to take a closer look at the happenings. Intervention and regulations from UK Sport further strengthen the voice the Downie sisters lent. And ultimately took root as they received MBE honors years later. “…really it’s a massive ‘you did do the right thing’,” were Ellie’s words after the honors.
