Rebecca or Becky Downie has had a remarkable presence in the British gymnastics arena. The gymnast’s presence has brought accolades and recognition as a 2-time Olympian and a double European champion. However, it hasn’t all been a smooth sail for the 31-year-old Olympian. Over the past couple of years, the gymnast fought through a family tragedy, Olympic team omission, and despair encompassing the circumstances.

Nonetheless, in 2022, Becky overcame her battles to make a return to the sport, better and stronger. Apart from focusing on her many contests, Becaky also extended a hand to her sister Ellie to voice abusive and mental health concerns in the industry. Today, as her comeback entailed recognition and the 2024 season’s arrival brought anticipation, Becky cherished her journey with a heartfelt note.

“For too long, the health and wellbeing of young girls has been of secondary importance to a dated, cruel, and – we’d argue – often ineffective culture within women’s gymnastics training,” the sisters added in a statement. The remark evoked a response from British Gymnastics to take a closer look at the happenings. Intervention and regulations from UK Sport further strengthen the voice the Downie sisters lent.
