Is Paul Skenes the next big thing in MLB, or just a flash in the pan?

Being great at what you do is justifiably something to get your juices flowing. However, watching your beloved achieve newer heights is just as thrilling a feeling, and LSU’s Olivia Dunne is experiencing just that. Livvy’s baseball star boyfriend Paul Skenes has been turning a lot of heads in the MLB, and he’s still just in the early phase of his career! Naturally, his latest milestone has the reigning NCAA champ gushing.

The official MLB social media account took to Instagram on November 18 to announce the fresh honor received by the Pirates pitcher. “Paul Skenes is your 2024 National League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year!” reads the emphatic caption of the post, and naturally, the LSU queen had to join the party with all of her cheerleading skills.

In the comment section of the IG post, the Tigers’ gymnast noted that this was coming. “Well deserved,” reads Dunne’s comment, as her jubilation cannot go unnoticed. But the Rookie of the Year isn’t the only feather Skenes added to his cap this season. Thanks to his dominant performance in his debut year, Olivia’s bae has also made it to the All-MLB first team, highlighting just how crucial he has been to the Pittsburgh team’s success despite joining the team in mid-May this year.

Skenes was the second-top pick when the Pirates drafted him in 2023. Signing with a record $9.2 million bonus, Skenes was already looking like he had a successful career ahead when he debuted at the MLB Pipeline. But that faith in him from the team wasn’t misplaced. During his time at the Triple-A, Skenes also raked up an impressive 45 strikeouts in 27.1 innings, already making him look like a star in the making.

Even after debuting with the big boys, Skenes maintained his rampage. Ending the season with 170 strikeouts and an 11-3 record in 23 starts, Olivia Dunne’s baseball star cemented his worth with gusto, making history as a rookie. He also received finalist spots for the NL Cy Young and Jackie Robinson ROTY awards, along with being named the Rookie of the Year by Baseball Digest’s NL. Not only this!

Days ago Paul Skenes is crushing it, snagging MLB Rookie of the Year honors with the Pirates, and the buzz around his limited-edition Topps rookie debut patch card is wild. Featuring his autograph and the exact MLB debut patch he wore, it’s already a collector’s dream—but things got spicier when the Pirates offered a treasure trove for it: 30 years of home plate seats, signed jerseys, and a meet-and-greet with Skenes himself.

Then the ever-supportive and top-paid female NCAA athlete Livvy, never one to sit on the sidelines, raised the stakes by commenting on her BF Pirates’ post: “Let’s raise the stakes. The person who finds the card can sit with me at a Pirates game in my suite.” Naturally, the internet lost it. Now as celebrations are certainly in order, Livvy will also have to keep in mind the arduous task she has ahead of her own.

Olivia Dunne eyes another historic moment for herself

In the last NCAA season, Dunne and her LSU Tigers squad made history as they lifted the first national gymnastics title in the program’s history. Naturally, fans wanted to know if Dunne would want to end her collegiate career on a high and be back for another shot at glory for her final year at Baton Rouge. Unsurprisingly, the prospect of being a part of the Tigers team that also defended its title for the first time successfully proved to be an enticing one, and Livvy announced her return in July with an enthusiastic message. “Not Dunne yet,” quipped the gymnast, and fans went into a frenzy to see what she had in store for the final ride.

Dunne’s NCAA career has also proved to be more than just giving rise to another gymnastics star to state the fans’ needs. Instead, she used the platform’s regulations to her advantage in style. Making the most of the NIL (name, image, and likeliness) rules, Livvy has amassed a massive valuation for herself through social media platforms, making her one of the most recognized collegiate stars in the country.
