Katelyn Ohashi became an overnight sensation on the internet after her historic gymnastics floor routine in 2019. The UCLA gymnast achieved a rare milestone in her career and received a perfect 10.0 score for her routine. However, when UCLA Athletics first released the video of the young gymnast’s insane routine, no one knew the struggles Ohashi had faced. Throughout her childhood, the talented gymnast faced challenges and body shaming and didn’t even know she had an eating disorder.

In an interview with Marie Claire, the gymnast said her life has revolved around the sport. Ohashi started gymnastics when she was only three. During the interview, the artistic gymnast said the pressure from coaches made her self-conscious from a young age. In her quest to live up to their expectations, Ohashi didn’t realize she was going down a slippery slope.

Katelyn Ohashi didn’t understand the sings

During the interview, Ohashi said she and her fellow gymnasts became conscious about their bodies and eating habits when they were 14. When Ohashi and her friends attended parties, they would try to watch what they ate.?“We?d feel so bad about eating that we would go to the bathroom and throw up without realizing that?s an eating disorder.”,?Ohashi told the interviewer Kayla Webley Adler.

The gymnast and her friends took other measures not to eat. Ohashi said they would regularly measure their thighs. If the girls couldn’t fit their hands around the middle of their thighs,?“Then we?d stop eating for the rest of the day,”?said Ohashi. The pressure from her coaches also forced the gymnast to restrict her food intake.

According to the Ohashi, even if she gained half a pound or couldn’t hit a skill, her coach would have a word with her mom.?“What is she eating?”?her coach would ask. The gymnast also revealed her mom would hide the candies and snacks she bought for Ohashi’s brother.

The gymnast punished herself for having junk food

Unlike other kids, the young gymnast’s coaches didn’t allow her to have junk food. Ohashi complied, but sometimes she couldn’t stop herself from having some junk food. However, she would feel?“sick and guilty,”?for it. In fact, Ohashi even punished herself for having candies or other snacks.

“I would go into my bedroom and jump rope and do other conditioning until I felt good enough to go to sleep,” said the UCLA gymnast. Since overcoming her eating disorder, the 25-year-old gymnast has gained at least 30 lbs.
