Romania’s Ana Barbosu has snatched back her Olympic bronze medal in the gymnastics floor exercise, with the International Gymnastics Federation putting things right by reinstating her to third place. This turn of events comes less than 24 hours after the International Olympic Committee confirmed the change, following the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejecting an appeal from Jordan Chiles’ coach.

The appeal had originally tipped the scales in favor of American Jordan Chiles, bumping her onto the podium over Barbosu. Yet, the drama is far from over as the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) now throws its hat in the ring, aiming to overturn the CAS ruling and stir the pot once again.

Well, on 11th August Christine Brennan shared a post on X, saying, “USOPC to appeal CAS ruling on Jordan Chiles.” In the statement, it’s mentioned, “ The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) will be appealing the recent decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Jordan Chiles. We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed.”

They further added, “The initial error occurred in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision. As a result, we were not properly represented or afforded the opportunity to present our case comprehensively. Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to ensure that Jordan Chiles receives the recognition she deserves. We remain dedicated to supporting her as an Olympic champion and will continue to work diligently to resolve this matter swiftly and fairly.”

Another update has been recently furnished wherein USA Gymnastics has rocked the CAS tribunal with new evidence, proving their inquiry was filed within 47 seconds. The compelling video footage, only recently uncovered, couldn’t be submitted earlier, adding a dramatic twist to the ongoing saga.

Fact: Jordan Chiles is the only athlete, in history to have lost an Olympic medal because of a judging error. But what led to this point?

IOC and FIG to iron out the details of medal return and reallocation of Jordan Chiles- Was it worth it?

On Saturday, 10th August, the CAS ruled that Landi’s appeal for a 0.1-point increase to Jordan Chiles’ score. It revealed that it was submitted four seconds past the one-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The IOC has mentioned that they will communicate with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to discuss the return of Chile’s bronze medal and work with the Romanian Olympic Committee to organize a ceremony for Ana Barbosu to receive a reallocated medal.

CAS has directed that the original finishing order be restored, placing Barbosu in third, Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea in fourth, and Chiles in fifth. CAS has directed the FIG to finalize the rankings following this ruling. Has left the decision, on awarding the bronze medal up, to the discretion of the FIG. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation has asked for three bronze medals to be given out. The FIG has decided to delay making a choice regarding the redistribution of the medal leaving it up, to the IOC. The IOC has stated that it will respect the FIG’s decision and work, towards retrieving the Chiles medal.

The rapid advancements are making the situation more complicated, for athletes who are already, under a lot of pressure. Nadia Comaneci, a figure, in gymnastics, has shown worry, about Barbosus ‘ being, voicing disapproval of how the situation was managed and advocating for improved safeguarding of athletes. Chiles, who subtly mentioned her challenges, on Instagram has received backing from her US teammates such, as Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee who expressed disapproval of the judge’s decisions.

With that being said, the scoring error has significantly impacted all the athletes who were/are closely associated with it.
