Earlier today, US Olympian Suni Lee announced her upcoming departure from the Auburn University team, marking the end of her college career. Furthermore, she revealed her plans for the future.

Born in 2003, Sunisa Phabsomphou, A.K.A Sunisa “Suni” Lee, is a Hmong-American artistic gymnast. The 19-year-old gymnast became the all-around champion in the 2020 Olympics and also won a bronze medal in the uneven bars. Prior to that, she was a part of the gold medalist team at the 2019 world championship. She plays for the Midwest Gymnastics Center.

Suni Lee announces the end of her journey with Auburn University

Sunisa has been a part of the Auburn Tigers, Auburn University’s college team, since 2017. However, as her time with them is nearing its end, Lee made use of her SNS platforms to make the official announcement.

In a video on her Twitter account, Lee announced she would be parting ways with the University team after this season. She?said, “?Today I’m sharing a decision that has weighed on me for a really long time. As an athlete that has competed on the highest level on the world’s biggest stage. I have been fortunate enough to experience that once-in-a-lifetime feeling. And the indescribable emotion when the gold is draped around your neck. But I don’t want it to be just once in a lifetime.”

Following the announcement and priority for the last season, she said, “This would be my last season with the Auburn University. My focus right now is to make it the most incredible season yet. And to be the best teammate I can be.”

After announcing her departure from the University, Suni also shared her plans regarding her return to the sport. Her focus is now on preparing herself for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Suni said, “After this season I’ll be returning to Elite gymnastics. I have my sight set on the Paris in 2024 and I know what I have to do to get there.”

Lee has had a tough childhood and has experienced many tragedies in life. With that being said, Suni ended her video with a positive message for all aspiring gymnasts. She said that every girl who has faced difficult circumstances and has pushed through them, then they could do it too, as she did. She also emphasized that if one puts in the effort, then nothing is impossible.
