In the Olympic season, Trinity Thomas was all set to announce her elite gymnastics comeback through the Pacific Rim Championships. However, the NCAA legend recently backed off from the contest “prioritizing health and well-being.” The late revelation did upset the stakeholders, as the concerned events were set to roll from April 21 to April 28 in Columbia. Moreover, Trinity Thomas’ selection came through a hefty process at the US National team camp in Katy, Texas. As a result, there will be no replacement for the gymnastics star.
In the selection process, the limited seats were assigned to the table toppers in Katy. Trinity Thomas and others secured a place in the elite championship event in Columbia. Hence, other participants who didn’t make the cut opted to participate in the City of Jesolo Trophy event, which concluded on April 21. USA Gymnastics revealed that the remaining four gymnasts in the lineup will “compete as a team” in the Pacific Rim Championships.
Trinity Thomas posted a message about her decision that read, “My focus going into this summer has been to prioritize my health and well-being while pursuing my return to elite gymnastics. At this time, it is more beneficial for me to stay in Gainesville for consistent treatment and training. With that being said, I have chosen to withdraw for the Pacific Rim Championships.”

While Trinity Thomas will have to wait further to announce her return to elite gymnastics, the Florida Gators’ standout will be part of the Core Hydration in May.
However, her sudden bowing out from the Pacific Rim Championship led to some disappointment in the fans.
“Feels like a bad sign,” Gymnastic community disheartened by Thomas’ withdrawal
The poise of Trinity Thomas on the balance beam is often termed as unparalleled. She flaunted those moves in the US Gymnastics camp last time in Katy. Moreover, the 23-year-old was thoroughly up for her elite representation in the Olympic year. Aiming to do that, she ultimately accepted the post of Gator student coach at the University of Florida. She was aiming for the Pacific Rim Championship, which would mark her return to international competitions after six years, but for now fans will have to wait.
One disappointed fan voiced his displeasure saying that he wanted the entire meet to be cancelled.

Thomas’ decision means Team USA will be down to only four members while other teams will have five. According to one user, this doesn’t look good in terms of the bigger picture, and even referred to it as a “bad sign.”
on a personal level I can understand but in a grand-scheme and optics level this feels like a bad sign https://t.co/uAe5HoZnBW

Earlier this Gaby Douglas withdrew from the Winter Cup after she tested positive for COVID-19 in February. This wasn’t also the first time that Trinity Thomas missed out at an event. She was forced to withdraw from elite gymnastics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics trials due to an ankle injury. She also abruptly pulled out of the Pittsburgh regional and later did not take part in Florida’s regional final after suffering a lower-leg injury in 2023.
A worried fan that this doesn’t pose an ideal picture for Team USA ahead of the Paris Olympics.
If I had a nickel every time an Olympic contender pulled out of a meet this year, it’s not looking good :/ https://t.co/rEPExVMU8W

Meanwhile, on Reddit, one user voted for Marissa Neal, who could replace Trinity Thomas. But the lack of time complicated the situation.
They wrote, “As much as it sucks they’re not replacing her, it’s not like there were a whole lot more options especially this close to competition. Only 4 of the 14 seniors that verified at April camp did not get an assignment – Marissa Neal, Reese Esponda, Norah Christian, and Nola Matthews.”

But another Reddit user went one step ahead, bringing Florida Gators into the scene. In the recently concluded National Gymnastics championship in Fort Worth, Florida Gators participated with high esteem. Eventually, Trinity Thomas was in the program being the student-coach. So, as per the user, such a heavy engagement might have taken a toll on her. As a result, she removed herself from national duty. The comment read, “She would have just gotten back from Texas on Sunday night at the earliest, and I’m guessing she couldn’t train (or at least train normally) the whole time the team was there for championships. It’s understandable to me that she wouldn’t feel ready for a big meet so soon with those circumstances.”
In the meantime, other users floated the lack of planning issue in the situation. With Trinity Thomas set to miss out, how do you think Team USA will fare at the Pacific Rim Championships?
