In April, Laureus honored Simone Biles with the Comeback of the Year award, recognizing her spectacular achievements in gymnastics in 2023 after a two-year hiatus. However, to her, the best sporting moment from last year remains Sha’Carri Richardson’s 100m victory at the Budapest World Athletics Championships. Showering her praise on the latter’s resilience, Simone said, “She keeps pushing forwards, she never gave up, she showed up and showed out”. World Athletics celebrated such a warm cross-sports moment by sharing the gymnast’s comment on IG. But what remained the standout from that sport, apart from overpowering the two legends from the charismatic Jamaican trio?

As Simone Biles said, it had been an obvious show of resilience. Notably, Sha’Carri took 10.65 seconds to clinch the top podium on that windy evening. But in hindsight, she announced that there is someone now who can give a fitting reply to the Jamaican supremacy in the global sprinting competitions in the women’s category. Remember, in the Tokyo Olympics, the 100m podium in the women’s category was swept by the Jamaican trio of Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Shericka Jackson. However, Sha’Carri Richardson wasn’t there to counter them after missing her berth for breaching the USADA guidelines. But the failure to reach the Tokyo Olympics made her determined enough to prove her mettle.

Later, in Prefontaine Classic 2021, her humiliation by the Jamaican trio made the rivalry far more bitter. Along with that, Sha’Carri’s subsequent fiery words “Congratulations to the people that won. But they’re not done seeing me yet, period” proved to be the starter of the rivalry. So from that perspective, the 24-year-old sprinter successfully presented herself in Budapest, competing against Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson. Simone Biles certainly understands the factors that propelled Sha’Carri Richardson to sprint with full intensity that evening. In the meantime, fans have connected the dots, recalling Simone Biles’ own comeback in 2023.
