WIt must take a lot of courage, determination, and willpower for any female athlete to take a stand against a global giant like Nike. And yet Olympians Simone Biles, Allyson Felix, Kara Goucher, etc. are just a handful of women who protested against unfair treatment by the brand. News about Nike’s gender discrimination among athletes has been rife for quite some time now. But after a recent post by an English Internet personality, fans went completely haywire about the brand.

Oli London, the author of the book Gender Madness, recently took to her Twitter and curated a list of female athletes who have been mistreated by Nike. She even credited the sources who have reported on these issues faced by these women. Fans couldn’t hold their anger in and poured it over the comments.

“Nike History of Mistreating Women”, read the first line of London’s tweet. He then listed five American female athletes, who have faced the brunt of discrimination at various points. They are athletics stars, Alysia Montano, Kara Goucher, Allyson Felix, and Colleen Quigley. Also present was gymnastics legend Simone Biles. Here’s how each of them was mistreated.

Alysia Montano, a six-time track champion, had her pay cut after she was pregnant. Seven-time Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix faced the same ordeal by Nike while introducing as much as a 70% pay cut during her pregnancy. London also wrote, “Olympic Champion Kara Goucher was forced to run a race just 3 months after giving birth, after being threatened with a pay cut”.

Simone Biles, who silenced all retirement talks last year with a positive update, furthered this issue with a power move. The four-time Olympic gold medalist gymnast left her longtime sponsor Nike just three months before Tokyo Olympics 2020. She then partnered with Athleta, a women’s clothing brand. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Biles said about Athleta, “I think they stand for everything that I stand for”.

Fans can’t take it anymore with the brand

Allyson Felix too made a staunch statement on Nike at the Salesforce’s Dreamforce Conference. She said, “I had been with Nike for almost a decade but they weren?t willing to support me through starting a family in the way that I had hoped.” After all these, it was high time fans responded to the issue, and so, they did! They came out in numbers to vent their anger and fury in the comments section!

Well, it seems like the brand’s premier product, the Air Force 1 might just get impacted in sales numbers.

Another Twitter user vented his unabashed anger on the brand. Given that this has been going on for quite some time, the anger does not seem to be completely misplaced.

Curiously noticing another similarity, a user pointed out that such discrimination is beyond just sexism. But it also affects the African-American community largely and promotes a negative approach to motherhood.

Here’s another user calling out Nike since 2016. Nike’s products, which are highly priced and desired by most, are simply being discarded by this user for “bigoted” practices.

As the fan hate continues, some even compare the brand to pure devilry. Here’s one user pointing out how such practices are against basic humanity.
