Fred Richard won an all-around in the 2023 World Gymnastics Championship, breaking America’s thirteen-year medal drought. At just 19, he became a fan favorite and proved—“When it pays off, it’s just the greatest thing.” As the youngest man to win the title right before the Olympics, the spotlight highlighted his goal “to grow the sport” which fast-tracked upon viral video uploads on TikTok.

However, the balance in his journey continued when opting out of the Winter Cup last year came alongside a prestigious athletic award nomination for Richard. As D-day draws near, an update thrilled the gymnastics community, leaving many wishing for his success.

Fred Richard lands a venerable place in the nominee list

The Amateur Athletic Union James E. Sullivan Award, which felicitates excellent athletes with leadership, citizenship, character, and sportsmanship qualities, returned for the 94th edition. Recently, @USAGym shared a post on X, bearing the exciting news: “Fred Richard is an #AAUSullivanAward Finalist! The award honors the most outstanding athlete at the collegiate or Olympic level in the United States and we are so proud to have @FrederickFlips represent the sport of gymnastics!” He is among a list of other popular nominees/finalists such as Caitlin Clark, David Taylor and more. Voting for the same is open to the general public as well.

The teen gymnast garnered recognition during the lockdown and launched his career at an amazingly young age by using social media to spread his message and take the lead. His sincerity and deep regard for gymnastics further resonated in the Frederick’flips’ username on Instagram, earning him 232K followers. In terms of elite records, he finished third all-around in the 2023 Xfinity National Championships earning a Worlds spot. During the World Championships, he helped Team USA win the bronze medal and an individual bronze in the all-around competition.

Richard began competing for the Michigan Wolverines in the 2022–2023 season, further adding accolades to his NCAA portfolio. He successfully combined elite and collegiate gymnastics last year, earning an astounding five medals in the 2023 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships, including three golds. Currently competing in the fresh NCAA season, Fred continues to serve as motivation in the mats.

Michigan lost 412.150 to 407.400 in the final score of their matchup with No. 7 Ohio State on Week 10. The champion performer, Richard, recorded the highest all-around score of the week, 84.350. With a score of 13.800 in the individual high bar event, which goes on to show his uniform growth in both on and off mats success.
