In an interview with Inside Gymnastics Magazine, Mary Sanders shared insights into her journey with Christy Sandmaier, revealing the inspiration behind “9 Lives By 35,” and her reflections on her career. Sanders opened up, sharing that the idea of writing a book didn’t dawn on her until the onset of the pandemic. As she navigated through life’s twists and turns, she realized that her story remained untold. This made her want to share her story with her kids and the world.

She shared, “I had two kids during the pandemic and I thought, ‘you know, I think it’s time if they’re going to really understand their mother and who I am.’ I wanted to show the world who I am. Mary Sanders, as a whole, that’s kind of the reason why I wrote it.” Mary Sanders came up with the title for her book early on in the writing process.

She was worried about how to fit all the different parts of her life into one book in a way that made sense. But then, the title “9 Lives By 35” just came to her, and she felt it perfectly captured her story’s essence, as did the publishing company.
