Simone Biles, widely regarded as the G.O.A.T of gymnastics, made history by becoming the youngest recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. At 25, she has 32 Olympic and World Championship medals despite withdrawing from the 2020 Olympics. Sporting a bubbly demeanor and as an advocate of mental health, she earned a special place in the hearts of millions.

The other side of the story is a debate on how deserving the young gymnast sensation is to receive such a prestigious honor, which has a history of recipients of more accomplished people or those who have already passed away. In a casual chat on ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’, Biles discusses one such conversation she had with her namesake during the award ceremony.

Simone Biles meets her namesake

In the talk show, Simone recalls the day she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She described it as a fun day with her family, fiancé, uncle, aunt, and agent. The conversation took an interesting turn when Simone mentioned the candidate next to her. Interestingly, her name was Simone too.

They casually greeted, and the gymnast Simone was asked, “How do you feel? You are the youngest person ever. Where do you go from here?” The G.O.A.T of gymnastics showed no hesitation and replied, “Ya! That’s a good question.” She continued that she had no idea. Simone Campbell (American Roman Catholic Religious Sister, lawyer, lobbyist, and executive director of NETWORK.) blurted, “That kind of sucks.” On hearing that, the interviewer got curious to know who the other Simone was. The gymnast replied, “She’s more accomplished.. way much more than me in life.”

It didn’t please the interviewer. He seemed to have gotten annoyed by her response to the gymnast and said, “She needs to back off”. However, the gymnast wonder girl took the comments sportively and replied to her, “You are right.

She further supported her namesake’s comment that most people get the award when they are older or have already passed away. Although the comment must have taken her aback, the G.O.A.T said boldly, “I really don’t know what I will do with the rest of my life.

Biles speaks loud and clear

It is not the first time we have witnessed Biles being vocal and clear. She is of strong opinion and doesn’t refrain from speaking her heart out. As much as Biles is remembered for her phenomenal success in the sports world, her decision to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics is an incident one can never forget.

When asked about her withdrawal, she said, “We also have to focus on ourselves, because at the end of the day, we’re human, too,” She continued it was essential to protect one’s mind and body rather than just going out there and do what the world wants them to do.
