At age 6, Simone Biles began competing in the sport by attending Bannon’s Gymnastix. There she first met her long-time coach and gained the confidence to compete internationally. She quickly caught up to her contemporaries, who had started their training as infants.

Simone has made the US proud with all her achievements and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Now, her name is scribbled on the advanced USS aircraft carrier. In addition to Simone’s name, six-time Olympics medallist swimmer Katie Ledecky’s name has also been inscribed.

Simone had already mounted herself as the most dominant gymnast by the time of the 2016 Rio Olympics. Similarly, Ledecky has made a name for herself as well in her sport. The Twitter handle of the US Navy shared the tweet and gave their name a shoutout.

They wrote in the caption, “Looking forward to your future in the Fleet, CVN 80! NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Keel Laying commemorated with the participation of @Simone_Biles and @katieledecky for the future #USSEnterprise (CVN 80).”

Meanwhile, as per the Navy.mil, Simone Biles expressed her pride in being a part of the Enterprise heritage and celebrating the next significant step on the ship’s path, which will do christening and delivery in a filmed greeting.

While Ledecky added, “It’s apparent to me that even as these shipbuilders work with great efficiency—another key in swimming, to complete each task, no shortcuts are being taken to ensure that the “Big E” lives up to its great reputation.”

Biles and Ledecky’s legacy

Simone has supported mental health causes while enduring criticism for withdrawing from the Tokyo Games. She decided to prioritize her own needs and mental health, and she has fought to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness in athletics. Biles has won four Olympic gold medals and is sometimes known as the GOAT of gymnastics.

Meanwhile, Katie’s performance in London is still astounding to this day. She surprised the field by claiming gold in the final and shattering the record of 1989. She has seven gold medals and one silver medal under her belt. Her performance in Rio Olympics remains a mesmerizing point in swimming history.
