March 18, 2024, turned into a pivotal moment for five-time U.S. champion Brody Malone. A ‘super painful’ injury sidelined him last year, prompting a 14-month hiatus from the all-around gymnastics competition. However, anticipation mounts for June 2 as Malone gears up to make his return at the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

The 24-year-old gymnast made his mark on the world stage as a member of the U.S. Men’s Team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he faced a setback in 2023. In a recent interview, Malone vividly recounted a fateful day at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge in Stuttgart, Germany. It was on the high bar, his signature event, where the injury occurred, momentarily altering the trajectory of his career as he described the excruciating pain he felt at that moment.

During his routine in Germany, as he prepared for his dismount on the high bar, his left hand inadvertently peeled off prematurely, sending him soaring through the air in an unintended trajectory. The landing proved catastrophic, as he awkwardly twisted his right leg upon impact. Recalling the incident, Malone admitted,I slipped off the high bar on my dismount… It was actually a pretty good routine all the way up until that point … but I slipped off, did some weird flips in the air and the thing I did wrong was I tried to land it, and I probably shouldn’t have.”

Although the initial sensation wasn’t excruciating, Malone vividly remembers the discomfort. In his words, “I wouldn’t say it was super, super painful when it happened.” He described it as a disconcerting pressure, coupled with the unsettling feeling of his knee seemingly dislocating. The latter revealed the severity of the injury, which was a tibial plateau fracture in his right knee, a fully torn LCL, a torn meniscus, a partially torn PCL, and additional cartilage damage.

Subsequent surgeries were required to address the extensive damage, including the insertion of nine screws and two plates to stabilize his knee. Even though the rehabilitation process seemed challenging, Malone stayed determined, with the encouragement of his father, John, and his fiancee Serena. With his recovery now complete, Malone has already returned to competition this year, albeit not in all-around events.

Brody Malone’s progress towards Olympic return

Brody made his first appearance in January 2024. He showcased his skills on the pommel horse and held up pretty well. By February’s Winter Cup, he had added a third event, the parallel bars, to his repertoire. Continuing his rigorous preparation, Malone has been diligently reintegrating floor exercises, vaulting, and high bar routines into his competition lineup.

While competing in the all-around isn’t a necessity for his Olympic aspirations, excelling across multiple events could significantly bolster his chances of securing a coveted spot in the Paris Games. If successful, these games might mark a poignant conclusion to Malone’s Olympic journey.

Malone’s prowess on the horizontal bar, evident from his bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships and his subsequent 2022 World Championship title, coupled with his impressive tally of ten NCAA National Championship titles, underscores his invaluable contribution to the sport and his team’s ambitions.
