Suni Lee recently ended her long hiatus. However, while she showed her willpower, her performance didn’t match her mental fortitude. The 2024 Winter Cup saw the reigning gymnastics all-around Olympic champion struggle to connect the dots and even take some falls. As a result, she has now missed out on the opportunity to participate in the upcoming Baku World Cup.
The 20-year-old has been struggling with incurable kidney disease for more than a year now. While Suni Lee told the media that she was feeling better and prepared, it looked like she still had a long way to go to recover. Speaking to Olymics.com ahead of the Winter Cup, Sunisa Lee’s coach Jess Graba said, “The whole reason we’re doing Winter Cup is so that we can go to Baku and get the skill named because Suni really wants to get that out of the way. Get it out of the way, so it’s not a question mark going into the spring.” Unfortunately, in the Winter Cup, that very skill betrayed Suni as she fell while executing that. From here, the battle looks tough for Suni Lee. In fact, she seems to be in the same boat as another Olympic champion.
