Simone Biles and Suni Lee enjoying pizza—Is this the new era of gymnastics freedom?

A truly heartwarming scene has graced the gymnastics community recently as Simone Biles and Suni Lee were spotted sharing a laid-back pizza meal in the Olympic Village, presenting quite a departure from yesteryear. 17 years ago, under the strict governance of coach Marta Karolyi, American athletes rarely saw each other outside training sessions, let alone think of spending laughter-filled pizza sessions in groups as they did recently in pre-Olympic times. Marta probably would’ve also raised an eyebrow or both if she saw any of her athletes focusing on being in touch with the outside world beyond the training room, as Simone Biles did when she posted a picture with her teammates on social media. Thankfully, the days of the strict regime are long gone, and our favorite gymnasts have the wiggle room to feel humane enough and share good food and good moments together before diving head-on into the competition! The Paris Olympic Village surely seems to provide enough reasons for them to do so.

One of the captions on Biles’ posts that read, “first family dinner,” showcased how much they are enjoying the luxurious treatment in the Village. The mood for the upcoming challenges was set when Jade Carey held up her hand, showcasing a sign of victory with a smile, and Suni Lee was just midway through her meal. The relaxed communal meal shared by the gymnasts tells a story that is symptomatic of a wider, healthier transformation in gymnastics in recent years.

Liviefromparis shared a Paris Olympic Village behind-the-scenes photo on X handle with the caption, “Seeing Suni & Simone getting pizza 🍕 at the Olympic Village 🫶🏼 So nice to see how much the culture has changed compared to the Marta/ ranch era 😥. #Paris2024“. It highlights the positive cultural shift fans have witnessed in the Olympic Village, contradicting the present environment with the strict conditions of the previous Karolyi era—an era that was marked by harsh training programs and specific dietary restrictions, prohibiting athletes from leading social lives or enjoying little pleasures.

During her rule, performance and perfection were overemphasized and were accompanied by regularly disregarding the personal comfort and social well-being of their athletes. While finally stepping down as coach in 2016, reflecting on her strict rules, Karolyi once even stated in the New York Times, “I’m known for being very tough,” emphasizing her reputation for maintaining a strict training environment. On the contrary, under the new leadership, today’s U.S. Athletics’ climate in the Olympics is a delightful indication of a more caretaking and fair way of just being present in the moment. This transformation was further exemplified by a video clip where Simone Biles and Suni Lee were seen eating pizza like your friendly neighborhood girls!

In the process, athletes have found a less pressure-packed atmosphere where they can engage socially and find enjoyment in their craft, even though the workouts remain intense. This change is essential as it inculcates a healthy and positive environment surrounding the athletes that aids them in keeping their mental stability well intact, thus leading to an overall performance yielding satisfaction.
