Simone Biles has come a long way in the gymnastics world, transitioning from the “world is going to hate me” to “That’s so exciting”. The legend has made a major comeback in the sports world after her hiatus from the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and recently won her fourth career Laureus 2024 World Sports award under the comeback category. That journey is studded with several jewels. Biles recently spoke for the Laureus Award and candidly expressed her emotions for the comeback.
A social media update on May 4th from Laureus X account shows Biles talking about her journey from 2013 to 2023. The caption reads, “From retaining skills to having skills named after her, Laureus World Comeback @Simone_Biles reflects on an Award-winning return to competition in 2023. #Laureus24”.
Simone said, “Ten years ago, my very first world championships was in Antwrep so that was 2013, and last year in 2023, I made my sixth world team which was back in Antwrep and it was so crazy of everything that we recognized that was similar to 2013.” On that sixth occasion, Biles comfortably clinched a record-tying sixth-world all-around title. With 58.399 points in Antwerp, Belgium, surpassing last year’s champion, Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, by 1.633 points. Not stopping there, she delved into the nostalgia.

She further added, “One being I got my very first skill named after me in 2013 and in 2023, I got another skill named after me. Just 10 years apart some of the gymnasts are still competing that I completed with in 2013 so our longevity is staying there so that’s exciting.” Continuing the emotion, the legend stated, “It’s just so crazy to me that I got to be back in that same place and did just as good as when I was there 10 years ago.”

Even today along with fans when Biles takes a moment to reflect on the highlights of journey, it’s just amazing. Particularly, at milestones like the naming of “The Biles on Floor” skill after her debuting it at the 2013 World Championships. And, The element now known as the Biles II, was one of the most difficlty flip on floor which Biles first attempt in 2021 and nailed in 2023 championship. Remember Biles saying, “I feel like I learned the most about myself during Tokyo” to USA today when she was about to Withdraw from Olympics? The world was shattered with her withdrawing news, but deep inside the athlete was going through a lot. On April 17th, Wednesday, when Biles talked abouther battle with “the twisties” on Alex Cooper’s podcast, named as Call Her Daddy. The video went viral in a short time.
Unlike other sports, however, gymnastics poses unique risks if an athlete loses spatial awareness mid-air, potentially leading to hazardous landings. The four-time Olympic gold medalist, replaced by Jordan Chiles in the team event, underscored the paramount importance of mental well-being.

Recalling her experience, Biles shared, “As soon as I landed (the vault), I was like, ‘the world is going to hate me, and I can only see what they’re saying on Twitter right now.’” She expressed her overwhelming sense of scrutiny, feeling pressured to meet gold standards and fearing backlash if she fell short. Not just this, back in 2020 her aunt dies unexpectedly when she mentioned, “Two days ago, I woke up and my aunt unexpectedly passed, and it wasn’t any easier being here at the Olympic Games, at the end of the day, people don’t understand what we are going through.”. Ofcourse she has faced a lot.
In response to this challenge, Biles staged a remarkable comeback at the 2023 World Championships. There, she secured four gold medals in the team, all-around, beam, and floor competitions, along with a silver in the vault. As she gears up for the upcoming Olympics in Paris, commencing on July 26, the 27-year-old gymnast has the opportunity to further embellish her already impressive medal collection.
