Does the emotional support from friends like Jordan Chiles give Simone Biles an edge in competitions?

The 2024 U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Trials set the stage for Simone Biles to make history. At 27, the seven-time Olympic medalist became the oldest female U.S. gymnast in 72 years to qualify for the Olympics. However, even a world-class athlete like Biles isn’t immune to performance anxiety. Fortunately, she had the staunch support of her teammate, training partner, and dear friend, Jordan Chiles.

The Instagram page On Her Turf shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles on the final day of the trials. The clip captured the two World Champions Centre gymnasts sharing a brief embrace at Target Center in Minneapolis. The caption read, “Simone + Jordan have a moment before making the Paris Olympics,” read the caption.

The hustle and bustle of the staff, fellow athletes, and fans surrounded the two athletes as they embraced. You could see that both athletes seemed emotionally overwhelmed, presumably in anticipation of the results after two days of intense competition. Biles and Chiles have been training under head coach Laurent Landi since 2019 and share a deep friendship.

Other than the iconic gymnastics duo, others, including Tokyo Olympics all-around gold medalist Sunisa Lee, also appeared in the video. She seemed to have been walking over Simone Biles as the video ended. Biles, Jordan, and Lee are three of the five gymnasts who will represent Team USA Gymnastics in Paris. The 23x world championships gold medalist entered day 2 with the lead and finished on top with 117.225.

Sunisa Lee secured second place with 117.225, while Jordan Chiles placed third with a 111.425 total. Tokyo Floor Exercise gold medalist Jade Carey and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera were the other two who made the Paris Olympics team. Leanne Wong and Joscelyn Roberson will fill in the alternate spots. After winning a team silver at Tokyo 2020, the newly assembled Team USA is dreaming big.

After the exciting Olympic Trials, the women of Team USA have their sights set on gold. While Simone Biles’ brave admission of her mental battles inspired her teammates in Tokyo, she wasn’t at the best. In an interview with The Oregonian, Jade Carey revealed that she and the team have discussed the idea of redemption a lot. Everyone except Hezly Rivera represented the stars and stripes in Tokyo and hoped to outdo their previous performance.

I wanted a gold (medal) on vault and floor and didn’t get it on vault. So I think for me, vault is one of my biggest redemptions,” Carey said in her interview which The Oregonian published on Wednesday 10th July. With less than half a month left to go until the Olympics the entire team is focused on creating history at the 2024 Olympics. Thankfully, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles will once again have one another’s backs.
