Simone Biles broke America’s heart when she withdrew at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But as she made her way to the all-around finals on August 1, her fans were hoping she’d bring home Olympic glory. The crowd at Bercy Arena cheered louder than ever every time the 27-year-old made her way to the mat. Holding giant cutouts of the G.O.A.T’s face, everyone watched her perform a stellar floor exercise routine with bated breath. Will she make it? Is this enough to win an Olympic gold?
Spoiler Alert! It is. The 27-year-old scored a 15.066, bringing her overall score up to 59.131. She has made history yet again. The elite gymnast clinched her 6th Olympic gold medal, a sight many Americans were looking forward to. However, no one was prepared for what happened next. An eagle-eyed fan pointed it out on X, “Simone said “Rebeca can have the next one” 🥹❤️” Do you hear that? It’s the sound of a million hearts breaking.
No American has ever accomplished what Biles did in the French capital. She is now the third woman to win the women’s individual all-around twice after Larisa Latynina and Věra Čáslavská. But it looks like after having achieved a historic feat, she is now looking to pass the torch to the Brazilian. Or is she? We will never know. The 2x Olympic all-around has previously hinted at stepping away from the mat before. But is that what’s happening this time around too?

The Bercy Arena hosted a thrilling all-around finals on July 1. Biles stepped up for the vault first. With an impressive score of 15.766, she was well ahead of her competitors by the end of rotation one. After a minor mistake on the uneven bars receiving 13.733, many were concerned this would be the end for the G.O.A.T. All this while, Andrade kept making strides in her routine making it to the top. Biles seemed to have pull herself back up with a stellar routine on the beam. Even with a few close calls, she scored an impressive 14.566. But her flawless routine on the floor is what sealed the deal for the Olympian! She finished in style with a 15.066.

Rebeca Andrade had previously bested the 27-year-old at the 2023 World Championships. She overtook Biles in the vault event, and she was hoping she could replicate that result yet again on the world’s biggest stage. However, despite an incredible routine, she received 15.100. Up next, uneven bars! Nice swings, good handstands, great transition from high to the low bars led to a score of 14.666. Another 14.133 on the beam, but she is still trailing behind the G.O.A.T. She had just one more event to bring it home – floor exercise. But her score of 14.033 was not good enough. She had to settle for an Olympic silver, the same medal she won back in Tokyo.
