Simone Biles was saved by mother from incurring further damage at Tokyo. As Biles’ Tokyo struggles are well known, a recent excerpt from her mother has opened up a new dimension to her ‘twisties’ chapter. Apparently, when Simone Biles was feeling down and was having significant difficulty in performing her moves, she conveyed this to her mother, Nellie Biles. As soon as Nellie heard the news, she knew what to do. Despite it being a devastating end for Simone Biles’ Olympic dreams, Nellie asked her to step back.

In a recent interview with Today, Nellie Biles stated, “It was devastating… After her vaulting, she called me and then mentioned that she couldn’t do it anymore. My words to Simone was, ‘Don’t do it. Don’t feel like you need to push yourself because that’s the last thing I need is to see you injure yourself on television and I’m not going to be there.’” This was potentially life-changing advice for Biles as the break helped her regroup and come back stronger than ever. And all these were done by Nellie Biles from 6375 miles afar Tokyo, sitting in Texas. While this was certainly a masterstroke from Nellie Biles, she also comforted Simone when she was the most vulnerable.

Simone Biles was shocked when she failed to execute an Amanar. The move, which required two and a half twists in mid-air, saw Biles helplessly plummet to the ground. Such a visual shocked not only the fans but Simone Biles herself. Later, while speaking in her docu-series, ‘Simone v Herself’, Biles briefed that she felt like a “flying ragdoll.” The US gymnastics queen also detailed that the situation was an utterly dangerous one as it could have resulted in a potentially career-ending injury.

Distraught with her situation, Biles relayed her concerns to her coach and immediately called Nellie Biles. She instantly realized Simone’s situation and comforted her with words of sincere advice. In a recent video, their conversation was recorded as Nellie said to Simone, They will do their best without you. I don’t want you going out there if you’re not in a good place, and you don’t need to go out there and hurt yourself. That’s just not right.”

Nellie Biles went on to say that Simone needs to prioritize her health. She also tried to pacify her anxiousness by letting her know about how the entire gymnastics fraternity was praying for her well being. Well, Nellie Biles has been an amazing support for Simone Biles and it is only justified that she was angry with the IOC’s covid protocols.

After surviving a scary COVID-19, the Tokyo Olympics was finally underway a year later, in 2021. Although the pandemic was gradually easing, the safety measures were still very much in place. Thus, to ensure optimum safety for the athletes, the IOC decided to ban the spectators from witnessing the game live. And unfortunately, this list included the friends and families of the competing athletes too.

Such a rule meant that Nellie Biles would miss watching her beloved Simone take center stage in Tokyo. And expectedly, she was not happy. Reflecting on how things could have been planned differently, Nellie said, We could social distance and not see each other. That’s how huge their complex is, their venues are… It’s hard for me to understand that they cannot make accommodations. Of course, that’s just me being selfish. This will be one gymnastics event that I will never forget because I will not be present.” Thus, with such unwavering love and support, Simone Biles would feel even more motivated to bring back her glory days in Paris. As she continues to march on, the final chapter in Paris will surely be a spectacle for the world to witness.
