Simone Biles and Tequila have a classic love-hate relationship. It’s no secret she loves a good margarita—she even celebrates her “favorite holiday // national margarita day.” But Olympians train with great scrutiny, meaning no alcohol in the weeks leading up to the Paris Olympics. In fact, the organizing committee even built a sports bar in the village—sans alcohol. So, before heading to Paris, Simone shared her adherence to the rules with a playful snap of herself clinking glasses with her Team USA gymnasts, captioned “mocktails of course.”

Then, on August 8, right after her Paris Olympics competition, where she became the most decorated US gymnast in history with three gold medals and one silver, she posted on Instagram Threads, “I know tequila hate to see me coming,” ready to celebrate. However, just four days later, tequila seemed to win the battle. After her last night in the City of Lights, Simone took to Instagram Threads again, saying, “I’m never drinking again.” So what led to this sudden change of heart?
