Simone Biles had the last laugh at the Core Hydration Classic 2024 with the all-around crown. She owned the floor exercise event as well, with the highest individual score. But she had to lose the balance beam event to the reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee who found luck, accompanying her in defeating Simone.
Previously, Suni Lee had stopped at scoring 14. 5 in the balance beam, behind Simone Biles. However, after a thorough discussion among the officials and other stakeholders, the 21-year-old gymnast was given a rectified score that stood at 14.600. That score was enough to declare Suni Lee as the winner of the balance beam event in the Core Hydration Classic 2024.
Meanwhile, Simone Biles stood just behind her at 14.550 points. Participating from the Midwest Gym, Suni finally claimed the 29th position in the Core Hydration Classic 2024 in the all-around standing. The Minnesota native made her comeback from a situation that had put a question mark on her gymnastics appearance.

Last year, Suni Lee had spent a lot of time away from her elite gymnastics stint, waiting for her ailing kidney issues to be cured completely. But with the issue, her overweight stature had made the situation out of reach. But riding with the grit, the former Auburn gymnast kept her momentum intact to return on the elite route. With that, she took part in the Winter Cup, targeting a place in the Baku World Cup. But Suni’s aim was not fulfilled.

She also failed to register the full-twisting Jaeger move in her name, “The Lee”. The consistent hiccups in both uneven bars and balance beam schedules had slimmed her chances that evening in the Winter Cup. At the Core Hydration that seemed to lead to her missing the uneven bars routine. Such misses might make her lose the edge on her target of appearing in the all-around event at the Paris Olympics. But, on the other hand, the achievement of defeating Simone Biles indeed will boost her morale. Coincidentally in last year as well, Suni Lee faced Simone Biles and left the mat with her head high.

Suni Lee’s reverence for Simone Biles: a boon or bane?
In the past, Suni Lee claimed Simone Biles as her source of motivation. The gymnast has an unfathomable reverence for the 7-time Olympic medalist. “Simone is so good that the rest of us can only hope to finish second to her in the all-around. What else can you do? She does all sorts of crazy things no one else can do,” Suni had told about Simone once.
So much so that Suni even used to count Simone Biles as the obvious winner of the Tokyo Olympics. But this did more harm to her than good, forming the Impostor syndrome. “I think I just put in my head that I didn’t deserve to win,” she said, describing her takes on the series of episodes that kept her engaged in her mind. But the spree had to be ended. And it did.

Suni Lee fought with her mental demons to rise again. And last year, she faced Simone Biles in the same Core Hydration Classic. But she couldn’t complete all her schedules because of the ailing kidney. However, the 14.5 score on beam and 13.5 on vault proved to be enough for her to sail through the contest.
Subsequently, she joined Simone Biles in the national championship. But, Simone Biles won the Core Hydration Classic last year as well, with a score of 59.100 in total. Considering that, it seems like Suni Lee has changed a few parts of the script in 2024. This time, she completed her events without complication and faced the legend more evenly.
