The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, or LA28, are highly anticipated. Set for July 14th to 30th, 2028, the games are a thrill for sports enthusiasts. Recently, the games have had major developments in the past month. Just recently, the LA28 organizing committee proposed five additional sports to be included in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, pending approval from the IOC.

They are baseball, softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. Cricket is also set to return to the Olympics for the first time since 1900. And now that the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships have ended, the International?Olympic?Committee has?issued?a major announcement?for?the sport.

A recent post on X by the FIG, also known as F?d?ration Internationale de Gymnastique, announced, ? Good news! At the IOC Executive Board meeting today, Men?s & Women?s Artistic #Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Trampoline Gymnastics were confirmed as part of the sports programme of the Los Angeles 2028 #Olympics”.

FIG’s website quoted the President and IOC Member Morinari Watanabe, saying, ?I acknowledge the IOC EB?s support for the popular sport of gymnastics by maintaining the status quo with regard to our disciplines. I appreciate that there are many factors to consider when determining the disciplines for each edition of the Olympic Games, so I believe that this decision is a sign of the continued good health of gymnastics worldwide.” Despite requests from fans for the other disciplines within the sport to also emerge on the Olympic stage, the Committees have maintained the four disciplines.

The other disciplines in gymnastics that are not part of the Olympics

There are actually six types of gymnastics: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tumbling, acrobatics, trampoline gymnastics, and aerobics. Tumbling is a thrilling gymnastics discipline in which athletes execute intricate flips and twists in a breathtaking series. While it was initially a competition category in men?s artistic gymnastics dating back to 1932, it eventually became a fixture for both men and women. Though acrobatic gymnastics isn’t a part of the Olympic program, it plays a significant role in the U.S. Junior Olympics and enjoys international competition among both men and women.

Aerobic gymnastics takes a distinctive approach, emphasizing strength, flexibility, and aerobic fitness over acrobatic and balance skills. This discipline involves performances by individuals, pairs, trios, and groups of five people. Although aerobic gymnastics is not included in the Olympic program, it has been a fixture in the World Championships since the late 1990s. The discipline offers a diverse range of events, including individual women, individual men, mixed pairs, trios, groups, dance, and steps.

The Olympic program, with its limited slots for sporting events, has its reasons for excluding these disciplines. However, their absence from the Olympics doesn’t diminish their popularity and significance in the broader world of gymnastics. These disciplines continue to thrive and captivate audiences around the globe, with fans eagerly awaiting their opportunity to shine on the Olympic stage.
