Shilese Jones is arguably the top American gymnast right now outside of Simone Biles. Despite finishing as the runner-up behind Biles at May’s Core Hydration Classic, the 21-year-old was sidelined by a persistent shoulder injury and had to withdraw from the Xfinity US Championships. However, she successfully petitioned USAG to compete in the US Olympic Team Trials and will be competing tomorrow at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Yet, her labrum issue remains a critical concern.

As the final stretch to the 2024 Paris Games beckons the nation’s top athletes, Shilese Jones will have to face tremendous pressure and high expectations from her fans. While her followers mourned the loss of seeing Jones on the podium at the national championships, the gymnast’s coach thinks the injury couldn’t have come at a better time.

An article by The Seattle Times shared an update by Gymnastics Now on X yesterday, to highlight how Sarah Korngold thinks her student is in a hopeful place ahead of the Olympic Trials. The article quotes Korngold mentioning Shilese as “not in pain” and while she acknowledged that an injury is never desired or planned, it came as a “blessing in disguise“.

Korngold claimed that sitting out the US Championships has been beneficial for Jones, who was struggling with a labrum tear. While the US Classic was flawless for the two-time World Championships gold medalist in every aspect, the rest proved to be a blessing that they capitalized on. Justifying her stance, Sarah mentioned that preserving energy and momentum until the end of the Team Trials would be crucial for Shilese, who is poised to make her debut on the biggest stage, given her current excellent form in recent months.

If she was peaked for this weekend, and at her very, very best for this weekend, it would be so hard to then maintain that all the way through Paris,” elaborated Jones’ coach. However, there might be more than what meets the eye that has sparked the unquenchable thirst in Jones.

Losing her father months after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics was a major blow to Shilese’s dreams. Sylvester Jones was one of her biggest cheerleaders, and ever since his passing, his daughter has doubled down on her training. “When her dad passed, it gave her a big reality check,” Sarah told Olympics.com yesterday. Jones set her eyes on making it to her debut Olympic Games with such determination that it impressed even her coach to no extent. Only last month, talking about her student’s chances of securing herself a spot in Team USA, Korngold said, “Nobody’s going to get in her way.

The biggest issue right now is just like routine endurance. Like, just we don’t have enough repetitions,” is the only concern that’s on Sarah’s mind right now. While Jones remains behind the curtains and makes herself comprehend what’s at stake, let’s hope her dream of honoring her father from the banks of the Seine becomes a reality for a Seattle native.
