Building the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team begins with a straightforward process to Paris- That’s the U.S. Olympic trials. For Shilese Jones, this represents a crucial step forward, like other gymnasts. Throughout the Olympic cycle, Jones has consistently excelled. She claimed the bronze medal in the all-around at the 2023 World Championships and silver in 2022.

However, her current fitness is the main concern. A shoulder injury led to her withdrawal from the national championships last month. With trials commencing on June 27th, Sarah Korngold, Jones’ coach, provided a health update ahead of the trials.

Scott Bregman shared an update on X saying, “Sarah Korngold says Shilese isn’t in any pain this week, but they had to shut down for a week after nationals so they feel like they are still building up endurance, etc., a bit coming into Trials this week.

Her coach provided further updates, stating, “We rested for another week, pretty much after nationals, and then we’ve slowly been building back up into routines. She’s been doing her full routines. Obviously we don’t have as many repetitions as maybe we would like, but her body’s feeling good.” Reflecting on their decision, the coach added, “So, we still feel like we made the right decision. And we have a couple more workouts here to keep going. So that’s where we’re at.” Considering this update, do you think Shilese will make it through the trials?

Jones’ consistency is especially noteworthy, having an impressive 96% hit rate. In her early major international appearances, she played a pivotal role in Team USA’s consecutive world titles, flawlessly executing all seven routines to help the team win gold in both 2022 and 2023. Jones excels across all four events and is a strong contender for medals in the all-around, floor, beam, and particularly on bars, where she shows elegant lines and a diverse skill.

Despite her impressive skill set, Jones brings an element of artistry to the sport that often gets overshadowed by the focus on difficulty. She emphasizes the importance of clean execution.”It’s not just the difficulty but also how clean you can make it.” However, her success has also been driven by personal hardship. After missing out on the Tokyo Olympic Team, she faced the heartbreak of losing her father to kidney disease in December 2021. With her father’s memory as motivation, Jones is determined to stay healthy and make her mark at the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials in Minneapolis, with fans eagerly anticipating her return to competition.
