Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens have long held a visibly doting bond. Be it cheering on the grounds or celebrating milestones off of one, the two have captivated the audience’s hearts well. However, late last year, Owens’ remark on being the ‘catch’ in the relationship did not seem to sit right with the spectators; sparking an angered response.
“I always say that the men are the catch,” Jonathan Owens had said when asked about how he had managed to ‘pull,’ Simone Biles. Following months of backlash and criticism, the Green Bay Packers safety today cleared up the air, stating his intentions behind the remark.
“The comment I made was like jokingly [made] but people took it so seriously,” he begins on the Corner Suit Podcast. He further relives the question and states how humble Simone Biles had been despite her status in gymnastics. “She never bragged about the magnitude of her success,” he remarks, speaking of days when the two had initially started out. The Olympian’s demeanor thus did not hint at her popularity, which Owens reveals he missed out on because of his busy schedule.

One of the other reasons fans had lashed out at Jonathan Owens was because of his unawareness of Simone Biles’ feat in her domain. The Packers’ safety has previously iterated that it was in part because of the training he underwent during her rise to fame. “I don’t have time,” he recalls of his time at football camp around the time of the 2016 Olympics. He further wishes people got to see the viral schedule adorning a packed routine from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Nonetheless, while Jonathan Owens’ words being of the console to the spectators remains uncertain, Simone Biles has repeatedly asserted that she is by her husband, celebrating love.

Simone Biles turns a blind eye
Jonathan Owens’ remark was met with massive scrutiny by Simone Biles’ fans. The spectators had taken it upon themselves to let the gymnast know that Owens wasn’t the right fit. However, the 2-time Olympian stood a firm ground, subtly hinting that the words were lost upon her. “Are y’all done yet?” were the words Biles had posted on her stories, a few days into the incident.

She further followed up with goofy and warming updates she shared with Owens to persist in her point. But most importantly, Simone Biles showcased her respect and belief in Owens, affirmative about his ascending success. “In a couple of years, nobody is going to call him, Simone Biles’ husband. They’ll call me Jonathan Owens’ wife,” she said on the Pivot Podcast.
