Ever since her silver medal win in the women’s artistic team event at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, UCLA’s Jordan Chiles has grown in leaps and bounds. She won the gold at the 2022 World Championships and has been the flagbearer of breaking records. Her records and medals are a result of her near-perfect performance, which was yet again on display at Pauley Pavilion very recently. However, what drew attention from her fans was a controversial judgment towards Chiles.
Fans were not happy with the way the judges scored Chiles’s performance. She scored 39.9 with back-to-back 9.975s. Chiles was on fire. But given her performance, the scores weren’t enough to justify her immaculate performance for her fans.

Social media posts have flooded about Chiles’ thunderous performance yesterday at UCLA. The commentator even said, “The hottest gymnast in the country. You can expect perfection”. And perfect, it was. Except the score was imperfect. Even a slight deduction of points did not sit well with her fans.
Ever since Nadia Comaneci shocked the world at Montreal in 1976 with a perfect score of 10, the world of gymnastics hasn’t remained the same. It is one of the toughest feats to score 10 in the said sport, but Chiles’s performance has been without flaws. While there is no way of questioning the judge without proper knowledge, her fans definitely believe she deserved a 10.

Nevertheless, Chiles has still scored the nation’s top all-around score and the no. 2 ever in school history. Although she won silver at Tokyo in the teams’ event, it ended in heartbreak for her at the individual event.
Chiles received support from every corner, even the gymnastics G.O.A.T. Simone Biles
Even though Chiles failed to qualify at the event, she gained invaluable experience at merely 20 years of age. She also became friends with the G.O.A.T. Simone Biles. Their friendship has only blossomed since then, so much so that the latter even retweeted the post about the unfair decision towards her. She wrote, “this was definitely a 10 but aight” with a heart emoji formed with hands. She showed that her love and support will always be with her.

Here’s how some of the fans reacted:
“Robbed”
“Shame on the judges”
“where was the deduction?”
That’s a 10. Maybe she should’ve hopped then.

If NCAA scoring was right, this vault would score several tenths higher than most others. There’s nowhere near enough separation between good and great. This vault is great in all ways.
