From Tokyo failure to Paris triumph—Does Carlos Yulo's story prove mental health is key to success?

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo had a terrific Paris Olympics. He won two gold medals in gymnastics, which is also the only gold his country won and comprised half their medals in the competition. The gymnast qualified in three categories which were men’s individual all-around, vault, and floor. The first was the individual all-around where he finished at a lowly 12th place.

However, he recovered very well in the all-around and the floor competitions to win the gold medals in both. He also became the first Filipino man and only the second ever from his country to win an Olympic gold. It was a mammoth feat in every way you look at it.

Yulo didn’t have a good time at the Tokyo Olympics. During the floor exercise qualification, he fell down on a tumbling pass. He couldn’t make an impact in other events either missing every single final except vault. In there, he delivered a decent performance missing a podium finish by a whisker at 4th. However, he came to Paris determined to correct his wrongs, and he’s done just that.

After this raging success, he spoke about how working on his mental health post Tokyo helped him put out this performance. He said, “In 2020, I wasn’t that confident in myself; I felt shy with my movements because I didn’t really know myself yet. This time, I focused on that—on my mental health. It’s really important to have well-being in check.”

In a country like the Philippines, which is not a sporting giant, a single gold medal could do wonders for its future. Thus, this triumph of Carlos Yulo transcends himself and spreads towards the whole nation. His victory has the ability to inspire a whole new generation of athletes in his country. In fact, he himself plans to open a school for gymnasts one day. This move will be similar to one done by weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz who won the nation’s first ever gold medal in Tokyo.

Carlos Yulo recently received a new nickname from Filipino-American influencer Bretman Rock. Based in Hawaii, Rock congratulated Yulo in his podcast and called him “the Filipino GOAT”. GOAT is a term used commonly by sports fans. It is an abbreviation for the Greatest of all time. Thus, Rock was calling Yulo the greatest Filipino athlete of all time. This is a tremendous honor, and the gymnast has proven by his performances in Paris that he may be deserving of it. He has also been receiving enormous love and adoration in his nation.

As he trains in Japan under coach Munehiro Kugimiya, he rarely gets the chance to visit his country since moving to the Asian country in 2016. Now that he’s returned from Paris, people haven’t stopped giving him gifts to show their appreciation. He has been gifted a three-bedroom house in Manila worth $414,000 and also numerous cars. Additionally, many small restaurants have offered him lifetime meals fully free of cost. Thus, he’s being treated as a hero, like he should be. No matter what happens in Paris, he has already secured his legacy and will be remembered by his nation fondly forever.
