The U.S. Gymnastics Olympics Trials have already kicked off in Minneapolis on June 27. However, day 1 did not begin on a very good note for two of America’s biggest stars. Facing a devastating setback in the arena, a shadow has been cast over their Paris Olympics dreams. Shilese Jones, a frontrunner and the 2022 World All-Around bronze medalist was the first to experience misfortune. During her vault warm-up session, a false landing sent shockwaves among spectators. Although fans are waiting for her to return to the arena, it has already been confirmed that Jones won’t be competing on vaults. The arena fell silent, but that wasn’t all. 20-year-old Kayla DiCello too suffered from a similar fate.

Jones, who had already endured a tough year missing the U.S. Championships due to a shoulder injury, was quickly attended to by medical staff. But shortly thereafter, another shockwave hit the competition floor. Kayla DiCello, a rising talent with an eye on the Games, balked mid-air during her vault routine and landed in a dangerous manner. She could be spotted crumpling to the mat in visible agony. Medical personnel rushed to her side as she fought back tears, clutching her right ankle. The severity of her injury became evident when she had to leave the arena in a wheelchair.
