Sunisa Lee has been getting all the attention since the Tokyo Olympics. Honing her craft at the Auburn Tigers, Lee soon started to show glimpses of her gymnastics talent. After taking the NCAA realm by storm, Lee ventured out into the international sphere, qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. With a delayed start to the games thanks to the COVID outbreak, Suni Lee could not have asked for a more perfect start. As Japan remained witness to Simone Biles bowing out of the games, it presented Suni Lee with a golden opportunity. 

And Lee was nerdy enough not to let the gold slip away. Putting up a phenomenal performance, she clinched the all-around gold medal, etching her name into the Olympic history books. With some unfortunate incidents plaguing Lee’s life post-Tokyo, her triumphant comeback in Paris has once again brought her into the limelight. So much so that even Beyonce fans are fangirling about Suni Lee. 

Suni Lee’s ascension back to gymnastics greatness

Following the golden glory in Tokyo, Lee was left biting the dust. Trolls from all over the world criticized her constantly for not being worthy enough of winning the gold medal. To add more woes to her story, Lee was diagnosed with a complicated kidney disease that almost derailed her professional career. Fortunately for Lee, taking time off and getting the right treatment worked wonders. Coming back to Paris, Lee had a lot to prove. 

And surely enough, Lee did respond with a firm performance. Winning the team gold medal, Lee showed glimpses of her champion self. She further went on to win two more medals, one in the all-around category and the other in the uneven bars. Having proved her haters wrong, Lee gained back her confidence, and now she’s overwhelmed with the love and support she has received from the fans. 

Speaking with Caroline Fenton on Yahoo Sports recently, Suni Lee opined on how the hype around women’s gymnastics has changed over the years. Lee mentioned how more and more people began to recognize her and also recalled an incident with Hailey Bieber. Narrating the run-in, Lee stated excitedly, “I think it’s just absolutely insane when people come up to me like, ‘Oh my gosh, I know who you are,’ and I’m like, ‘Wait, you know who I am?’ ‘You’re like Hailey Bieber,’ but yeah, it’s just like random stuff like that. I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it’s real!’” 

Well, while this was surely a moment of magic for Suni Lee, such instances are becoming an increasing norm in her life. Ever since Lee’s Olympic success, her popularity seemed to have skyrocketed. As a result, even the likes of Beyonce have surprised Suni Lee by admitting to being her fans.

Owing to her immense success, Suni Lee was named one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year. Alongside other notable celebrities like Serena Williams and Allyson Felix, there was Lee’s childhood hero, Beyonce. Opening up to Yahoo Sports, Lee mentioned feeling a strong urge to interact with the superstar singer. However, she instead decided to curb her instincts as she saw Queen B being swarmed by fans. 

Moments later, Lee could not believe her eyes as Beyonce almost ran to Suni Lee. Exchanging pleasantries, the superstar singer mentioned how she and her daughters were big fans of Suni Lee as they caught her in action at the Olympics. Recalling the incident, Lee stated, “She ran up to me. And I was like, Wait, is this real life? There’s no way. She actually knew who I was… We had a real conversation. I mean, she was saying that her and her kids watched us at the Olympics.” Thus, with the cycle of life looking bright again for Suni Lee, she will hope to carry the momentum deep in the days to come.
