Is Simone Biles right to call out online trolls, or should athletes just ignore the negativity?

When it comes to the world of gymnastics, Simone Biles doesn’t just own the mat. She owns the conversation, too, all trolls included. How could she not? Biles has seven Olympic Gold medals in a sport where longevity is a big question. Of the seven, three were won at the Paris Olympics, where she showed the world why she was the queen. But let’s face it, with such fame comes the bout of scrutiny that even the GOAT can’t escape!

But beware, trolls, because Simone Biles is not afraid to clap back! Biles has had her fair share of online trials. And for her, it started young too! Biles started dabbling on the mats when she was six years old, and by the time she was fourteen, Biles had already begun her elite gymnastics career. Trolls never left her side then, too. However, “I was like 14, 15, 16, like I would clap back,” said Simone, reminiscing. A lot has happened since she was 14.

Simone has been on a journey of a champion since then. And now, she has a different and more exciting way of dealing with the noise online. “Now it’s just like, it’s not worth it. Oh, but I’ll get my fingers ready to tweet. If you’re tweeting, I’m tweeting,Biles said, via Not Just Football with Cam Heyward. Yes, it sounds playful, but it is a no-nonsense statement that clearly says if you want to pick a fight. Better be ready to deal with the queen’s words.

Simone did not stop there; she went on to add, “Sometimes it’s just like they also need to be reminded. But also, who goes to somebody’s page and does that?” Biles is tired. After all, she is no stranger to the muddy waters of controversy. Her most recent one? Simone Biles and her team found themselves caught in the not-so-pleasing comments of MyKayla Skinner. In a now-deleted YouTube video during the 2024 Olympic trials, Skinner slipped up!

The gymnast, who once upon a time competed alongside Biles for two Olympics, went on to say that today’s gymnasts lack the same depth and work ethic of previous teams. Although she tried to put the bullets back into the gun, the damage was done. And guess what? Biles was not about to take it; she clapped right back. But not until she had shown what the golden girls of America could do!

And boy-oh-boy did Simone Biles clap back in style! After winning the Team USA gold, Biles posted a series of pictures on Instagram and wrote, “Lack of talent, lazy, Olympic champions.” Now, when the GOAT posts, fans rally! The post sends the fandom into a frenzy, with many calling out Skinner. After facing intense backlash, Skinner went on to plead and ask her followers to stop. Back then, the queen clapped back with no warning. No more excuses anymore because Biles just gave a clear warning.

So, like, if you can do it and you can dish it out, you better be able to take it,” said Biles. And that’s checkmate, folks! If the army online wants to pick a battle with Simone Biles, you better come in your armor because let’s be real, when it comes to online wars, Simone can tweet circles around her haters. Noises shut out; Biles is a phoenix that just keeps rising.

It is not just the trolls that Simone Biles can fight back! The queen has redefined the scope of longevity in gymnastics. At 27, she still stands in her own league that remains untouched. And Biles doesn’t seem to stop! Her latest announcement? After releasing the first part of Rising on Netflix, Biles just dropped another surprise. The second part of the Netflix documentary, Simone Biles Rising, is coming on October 25. As of now, the trailer is a tease from Simone to the world.

Biles, as the world knows, pulled out of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The world saw a different side of an athlete’s life. One that brims with mental health, setbacks, and the pressure to be perfect. As Biles says in the trailer, “The goal is to win the Olympics. And then after that, we’ll see.” Now, since Biles has won three golds at Paris, what lies ahead is a mystery! Yes, of course, she is already on the Gold Over America Tour. What about LA2028? Answers are still in the air.
