Simone Biles prioritizing mental health over medals—Is this the new gold standard in sports?

It’s lonely at the top. Even more so if you’ve been good for your entire life. Probably that’s why Simone Biles has very few people in her life who truly understand the dedication and sacrifices you have to make to keep pushing yourself. With Tokyo ending with a disaster for the Houston native, the City of Love can be the place where she makes things right, and she has the right person in her mind who can provide the motivation to rummage ahead.

At the age of 6, Simone Biles hinted at a stellar career ahead as soon as she picked up gymnastics during a day-care field trip. Since then, she’s filled up cupboards with medals and accolades from participating in tournaments around the world. And she wants to keep doing it for that one person who’s always been by her side.

Even as Simone waits to add more Olympic medals to her closet, it looks like she continues to be fueled by the same passion that brought her early achievement. In her Instagram story, made public just about an hour ago, Biles shared an image of her younger self with the caption, “doing it for her. Small girl, big dreams,” noting how she still holds the same dedication to the sport despite all the years put into it.

While she has gone on to become one of the most successful gymnasts of all time since those infantile days, creating a massive fan following across the globe, Biles still seems to remember that little girl who started chasing after the dream. The shared image shows the country’s most decorated female gymnast during what looks like early teens.

On the other hand, as one’s gaze falls upon the side of the photo that shows Simone in her more recent years, one cannot ignore how she also sports the same kind of focus that the younger Biles can be seen wearing on her face. However, while the four-time Olympic gold medalist seems to have the same kind of butterflies in her stomach she used to have before getting on the bars as a child, she isn’t alone on her journey.

Simone Biles isn’t left standing on her quest

The Biles family has already reached the French capital and will be cheering for their gal from the stands. When Simone pulled out from the Olympics final three years ago, it was her family, especially her mother Nellie, who never questioned her decision. Instead, they held firm on the opinion that she should take care of her own mental state before putting herself in the line for medals. As she was met with backlash from the fans, her family remained unwavering in their stand. Moreover, due to the COVID-19 protocols during the last Games, it wasn’t also possible for the reigning world champ’s family to be there for her in Tokyo. But now, they’re also looking to do their part in helping Simone reclaim her top throne.

As Baby Biles and the rest of Simone’s kin wait to make their presence felt in the arena, her husband Jonathan Owens might also end up joining them. The NFL and Chicago Bears star was spotted at the stands during the Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships, and he could also be seen beside the Biles family in the coming weeks.
