“I’m crushed, but I’ll see you guys soon!” Gabby Douglas wrote on social media reporting Winter Cup withdrawal. The Olympian added that she had tested positive for COVID-19 hence prompting the decision. And today, just a few days after the news and Winter Cup, the Olympic gold medalist has announced to leave WOGA Gymnastics. The culmination of the events brought along an online discussion about the ‘truthfulness’ of Gabby’s COVID claim. However, the icon also found backing in the online community itself.
Fans jump in defense of the Olympian
Just as accusations of Gabby Douglas faking her COVID for the Winter Cup over WOGA news hit social media, fans were quick to reason the situation and jump in support. “Do not suggest that Gabby Douglas was faking her COVID positive. We’re in the middle of a COVID spike…” one of them wrote.
To be very blunt.
Do not suggest that Gabby Douglas was faking her COVID positive.
We're in the middle of a COVID spike and we have no idea what might have motivated her leaving WOGA. It could even be related to how the gym responded to her COVID positive.

The next one reasoned how it would be wrongful to fake COVID and there was no evidence Douglas provided misinformation. “There’s no evidence she lied,” another started.
There’s no evidence she lied about testing positive for Covid. I agree that one shouldn’t lie about Covid; having worked with survivors of abuse in sports, you don’t accuse an athlete of lying without evidence. If you don’t like that opinion, you have an opinion about what to do

The next the post speculated wrongful hand of her coach, backed by the unforeseen announcement. “I hope Liukin hasn’t been rude with her…” they wrote.
I hope Liukin hasn't been rude with her for having COVID before the winter cup, if so, let's hope we take down Valeri, I hope Gabby is well, and that she starts in a healthier gym🤨

Nonetheless, whatever the situation behind the scenes, fans let Gabby Douglas know they were here for her. “Sending only positive and supportive vibes,” one wrote.
