“I was 19 when I won my first Olympics, and I was like, ‘How am I supposed to top this?’” For someone who’s since become the most decorated gymnast in history, is there anything that could’ve surpassed the feeling of winning the biggest prize there is for the first time? Well, Simone Biles gave us the answer. “My wedding topped it. It was the greatest feeling ever.” However, the greatest feeling ever was shortly followed by months of a not-so-great feeling, something Biles opened up about to Vanity Fair.

Before Simone Biles and Jonathan tied the knot in May 2023, the NFL star played for Houston Texans. Until then, the couple called Texas their home. But a week after the wedding, the then-free agent signed with the Green Bay Packers. While Owens packed and left for Wisconsin, Biles stayed back in Texas, kickstarting what would be months of long-distance. And that’s what got to the gymnast.

Considering any couple would want to spend time together, especially when they’re newlyweds, Simone Biles told Vanity Fair, “I cried a lot.” It wasn’t that she couldn’t handle the distance. It was just that she missed her husband. “We’re both so busy, so it’s not like I’m sitting [around] waiting for him to come home, but it’s just hard,” she added. Unsurprisingly, this was also precisely how she felt when the Packers safety headed north to kickstart the NFL season with his new team.

In an Instagram story, Biles shared a picture of herself hugging Owens as he was leaving for Wisconsin. She wrote, “bawled my eyes out this morning when Jonathan left for green bay,” adding, “a mess.” It’s no secret that the NFL’s demanding schedule kept Jonathan Owens from visiting his wife and Texas as much as he would’ve wanted. But Simone Biles made the most of her off-season by visiting the Green Bay Packers instead. And she couldn’t help but talk about the love she and Owens have received.

“We love being with the Packers organization [and] Lambeau (the Green Bay’s stadium),” Biles remarked. “The fans are…I wouldn’t even call them crazy; they’re dedicated. They love their players as if those are their children.” Owens has fit right in with his team, and the fans and Biles see that. But despite the distance between them, the two have ensured that they send love and support to each other. Be it in the form of presents and messages or in person at the stadium, the two have managed to stay strong through it all.

Through thick and thin, Biles and Owens have stuck together

In the interview with Vanity Fair, Simone Biles revealed what drew her to Jonathan Owens. She said, “I think what I liked about him was his confidence. He truly believes he’s the best at everything.” Well, Owens proved her right by staying by Biles through her twisties, giving her the confidence to continue. Posting a carousel on Instagram, he wrote,

“Imma ride with you through whatever, baby ❤️ Your strength and courage is unmatched, and you inspire me more and more everyday SB 🤞🏽You always gone be my champ.” And as soon as she was back on the mats in 2023 for Classics, he ensured to shower her with love. Balloons, flowers, and words of encouragement on Instagram all arrived on time for the gymnast.

As for Biles, the Olympian has flown hundreds of miles to cheer on the Packers’ safety. On the stands, cold and hating the weather, or at home, celebrating milestones, the gymnast has never run out of support, so much so that she believes “nobody is going to call him Simone Biles’ husband, they’ll call me Jonathan Owens’ wife.”
