Her parents, Nellie and Ronald Biles had been two unwavering pillars of support throughout her journey, which had been a maze of difficulties. Despite the fact that he is her biological grandfather, Ronald stepped up to adopt Simone and Adria when their biological mother Shannon Biles battled addiction. The early years of Shannon’s children were spent in foster care because she was unable to give them the care, they needed due to her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. Ronald’s choice to adopt Simone and Adria was a significant turning point in their lives, one that was accompanied by both heartache and hope. This act of support and love gave Bile’s stability and set the stage for her amazing journey. However, Biles had to deal with yet another upsetting period of her life as she rose to fame.

Deep emotional scars were left on Simone Biles by Larry Nassar’s horrifying abuse, a former osteopathic sports medicine doctor. During an interview with the Today Show, the 24-year-old gymnast was questioned about how her horrifying encounters with the Team USA doctor-affected her mental health while competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. One of the more than 150 victims who came forward and accused Nassar of abuse is the world-renowned gymnast, who stated in 2018 that “It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special’ treatment'”.

Nassar was convicted and sentenced to up to 175 years. It was clear that the trauma she had experienced had had a significant impact on her mental health. Now as Biles is finally making her much-awaited comeback, she opened up about what keeps her going through all the traumas of her past.
