Jonathan Owens' game had Simone Biles' mother-in-law on edge—do you think family support impacts performance?

Simone Biles‘ reign as the queen of gymnastics is legendary, but her love story with Jonathan Owens adds an exciting twist each day! Well, Biles’ stardom took off after her stunning debut at the 2016 Olympics, but when she and Owens matched on a dating app in 2020, he had no clue who she was. “She pops up, and I’m like, ‘Let me see who this is,’” Owens admitted. Even in 2023, Owens got enough trolled by saying men are “the catch” in relationships and confessed he didn’t know Biles because gymnastics wasn’t on his radar. But once he discovered her legendary status, he aimed to match her top-notch level. So, did he rise to the occasion?

He definitely got his big moment in 2021! On David Kaplan’s YouTube channel, in the episode, “Intercepted with Kevin Byard & Jonathan Owens: TD vs. Titans, Wife Simone Biles & More! Episode 2,” Owens shared some amazing insights. He talked about his career’s biggest highlight, his emotional mom, and Simone’s role in it all. Owens revealed that his standout moment was his second-to-last game of the 2021 season against the Los Angeles Chargers. After a tough few seasons with numerous cuts, that game really shone as a career highlight for him.

He shared that both his mother and his then-girlfriend, Simone Biles, were there to watch him play—making it even more special because it was his mother, Arthurine Cannon’s, first time watching an NFL game live. And boy, did he make it count! During that game, Houston Texans safety (now with the Chicago Bears) Jonathan Owens snagged his first career interception.

In the second quarter of their Week 16 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, Owens picked off quarterback Justin Herbert’s pass intended for receiver Josh Palmer. He made a great play by intercepting the ball at the 1-yard line and returning it five yards, proving it was his time to shine.

Seeing it all unfold was nothing short of a blessing for Owens’ mother. Owens recalled, “She’s sitting next to my wife; it was my girlfriend at that time. She’s sitting next to Simone, and I’m miked up and nervous as hell. Josh P. (Josh Palmer) run out post corner man, and I’m in cover too undercut it.”

He continued, “My mom in the stairs; it’s like crazy, and you can’t make it up. Me and my mom sitting in the house and just watching sports center, and then they pan to Simone in the stands and my mom right there.” Reflecting on this defining moment, he said, “My mom is on TV, bro, and all my family calls, and it was just one of those moments, like, man, I belong.” And he found where he belongs, and most recently, he made Simone, now his wife, proud again!

Now, Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens made a special trip to Paris this summer to support his wife, Simone Biles, at the Olympics. Fast forward to September 8th, and it was Biles’ turn to cheer on Owens as the Bears kicked off their season at home against the Tennessee Titans. The game started off rough for the Bears, trailing 17-3 early in the third quarter with rookie Caleb Williams at quarterback. However, a pivotal moment came when defensive lineman Daniel Hardy blocked a Titans punt, and Owens scooped up the loose ball, returning it 21 yards for Chicago’s first touchdown of the season.

The Soldier Field crowd erupted, and Biles, watching from the stands, was so thrilled she tweeted, “I almost had a heart attack!” Owens’ touchdown sparked a Bears comeback, which included an interception return for another touchdown, leading Chicago to a 24-17 victory. While Biles dazzled in Paris with four medals, including three golds, Owens’ big play in his Bears debut showed he’s ready to make his own mark. With that being said, Biles will be thrilled to celebrate his heroics, just as Owens celebrated her Olympic triumph.
