December 2023. That’s when it all started. Simone Biles’ husband, Jonathan Owens, attended ‘The Pivot Podcast,’ hosted by NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder, where he candidly opened up about how their relationship began. His words, “She pops up and I’m like, ‘Let me see who this is’ … I had never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity,” and that it was really about how Simone “pulled him in” and not the other way around, which created a social media stir.
People fired back when he considered himself the ‘catch’ in their relationship. Some called him a ‘walking red flag,‘ others claimed they didn’t even know his name and called him ‘Mr. Simone Biles’ all this while, snubbing his identity. Was Simone going to stand back in silence? No. She had previously taken a stand for him, but now it was high time she laid this issue to the bed.
In Season 2 of Simone Biles Rising, which was released on October 25, she did just that! In Episode 3 of the Netflix docu-series, Simone Biles cites how people were the biggest fans of Jonathan until he decided to show up for the Pivot Podcast, where his words were “actually taken out of context.” Well, she claimed that was all they needed to become Jonathan’s biggest haters, right before he signed with the Chicago Bears in March 2024.

But Simone Biles had the perfect clap for such trolls. The documentary shows her reading one of the comments that said, “Who is that guy kissing the world’s greatest gyminist? (Because he spelled it wrong.)” Pronouncing the word with the same distorted spelling, the 11x Olympic medalist counter-questioned, “Who’s gonna go to somebody’s profile and say who you can and can’t love? Like that’s just ridiculous. People are just….”

Simone Biles clears the misconception in the series, once and for all. She says, “They [People] equate our love to the amount of trophies and medals and accolades that I have. That’s not how you measure love. Like that doesn’t equate to how much my husband loves me or likes me.” It’s probably just because they are in the public eye that people go up to their profiles and decide whom they can love. But Biles has put an end to that today. And this is one of the many times she has taken a stand for her marriage and her husband.

Simone Biles fiercely defends her love Jonathan Owens like a lioness
In April 2024, Simone Biles appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, where she broke her silence on this issue for the first time. She confessed how it initially felt ‘everything was okay’ after the interview, but when she opened Twitter, “everybody’s like Divorce this man. He’s mean.” At first, she thought it was hilarious, but it boiled to the point when she broke down. Simone Biles even tried clarifying how Owens treats her like a queen. “He’s the sweetest. He praises the ground I walk on.”
But things didn’t quite end there. In May 2024, this wave of hate resurfaced. After she added a post of appreciation for her husband, people’s minds harked back to the controversy. And once again, she had to intervene and ask them, “Y’all are blatantly being disrespectful to my relationship & my husband. So I’m gonna go ahead and say this one time. Respectfully, f**k off & if you keep commenting or tweeting at me, I’m just going to block you.”

No matter what, trolls squeeze in through the finest of cracks in the wall. When Simone Biles earned 4 medals in Paris to become the most decorated gymnast in the USA, Jonathan Owens was spotted wearing her gold necklace around his neck. And with that, people burst out furiously. She once again had to intervene and explain that she’d put her medal on all of her family members. She asked them to not make assumptions and to leave the two alone.
And now, in her documentary series, she’s doing just that. She’s always used her social media to defend her husband and her marriage, evincing that she is a doting wife. Do you think her answer in the docu-series Simone Biles Rising puts an ultimate full stop to this? Let us know below.
