In the last NCAA gymnastics meet between Oregon State University and the University of Washington on March 8, the OSU team triumphed with a score of 197.225 over 196.950 at Gill Coliseum. It proved to be the Beavers’ fourth consecutive victory, and now one regular season meet remains. Beavers clinched victory over the Washington team on the occasion of Senior Day, honoring the graduating seniors.

The senior gymnasts, namely Sydney Gonzales and Ariana Young, delivered memorable performances in the last meet. Now, headed towards the next contest on March 17, the associate head coach of the OSU team, Michael Chaplin, expressed gratitude towards the seniors on the verge of completing their collegiate careers.

Michael Chaplin took to his Instagram account with a celebratory spirit, to recall the past weekend as the Beavers triumphed. Posting a series of glimpses from the last matchup with the University of Washington, Chaplin captioned the post, “Wonderful weekend celebrating a @beavergym Win, our awesome seniors, @ariana.youngg @sydney.gonzales, & getting see some amazing alum back in Gill for final home meet in 2024! #gobeavs 🦫🧡🖤”

As the prized victory over Washington came on Senior Day, the Beavers went forth to achieve their fourth-straight 197-plus score. Ariana Young, a senior gymnast, excelled in both the beam and floor exercise. She scored 9.90 on the floor, which became a noteworthy tribute to her last performance at home. Sydney Gonzales also delivered notable routine performances at Gill Coliseum.

Senior Night was an exclusive opportunity to honor Gonzales and Young for their commitment to the team as they complete their gymnastics career.

Preparing for the next meet

As the 16th-ranked Beavers overtook the 25th-ranked Huskies, they are preparing for the next meet, enthusiastically. After their win, they will travel to Boise State for a three-team meet, where they roll up their socks to compete against Utah State University. Fans are scouting gymnasts Jade Carey, Sophia Esposito, and Sage Thompson, who have consistently excelled this season.

Talking about it, Coach Tanya Chaplin remarks, “We were fighting all along. … I think that everyone stayed true to what they needed to do all the way through.” She adds, “I hope that this gives them confidence going into our next road trip and then into the postseason because Pac-12s is right around the corner.”
