During an interview with a gymnastics peer and an Olympian for the “On Her Turf” segment powered by NBC Sports, Sunisa Lee dropped a few lesser-known truths from her childhood. The video interview was uploaded on the ‘On Her Turf’ Instagram stories in three parts covering three important questions about Lee’s athletic journey.

In her usual bubbly avatar, the Hmong-American answered each of the questions as candidly as possible. To answer the question, “HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN YOUR SPORT?” Lee gave a startling reply. Surprisingly, the origins of her gymnastics prowess were owed to her knack for performing flips on the bed. While her father encouraged the shenanigans, her “mom got sick of it and she finally decided to put me in gymnastics,” stated Lee.

Sunisa Lee’s love for gymnastics germinated from watching YouTube videos. She tried to emulate the moves all around the house without proper supervision from an expert coach.

Her mother’s initial decision to put her in a gymnastics training institute in Minnesota may have entailed some hesitation, but it has paid in spades. It has not only led to Sunisa Lee becoming an Olympic all-around gold medalist but also an iconic figure of resilience.
