In the gymnastics community, the name Bela Karolyi sparks significant debate. While the legendary coach’s impact on the sport is undeniable, his popularity remains highly contested. During his tenure as the head coach of the USA’s women’s national artistic gymnastics team, Karolyi elevated the squad to unprecedented heights. However, as news of his demise spreads, many gymnastics fans believe his passing may not warrant an outpouring of grief.
Since Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta arrived in the U.S. in 1981, the couple was entrusted with the responsibility of transforming the national gymnastics team. Under their guidance, Team USA achieved immense international success. However, Karolyi’s methods have long been a source of criticism. Even now, as fans learn about the news of Bela’s passing, many hesitate to hail him as a true titan of the sport.
On November 16, GymCastic took to X to share that Romanian icon Nadia Comaneci’s coach Karolyi has passed from this mortal world. “We have received word that Béla Károlyi has passed away,” reads the caption of the post, along with an official statement from the Karolyi family. “Your enthusiasm for life will be remembered forever,” the Karolyi family waved goodbye to Bela with an emotional message. But the fans seemed reluctant to mourn the loss.

Instead, many fans couldn’t help but recall how the Karolyis’ training methods often pushed gymnasts to their breaking point. While Nadia Comaneci’s success stands as a testament to Bela’s coaching prowess, several of his other athletes have alleged that his methods could be abusive. Furthermore, the association of former national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar with the Karolyi Ranch training facility in Texas added to the controversies surrounding them.

Naturally, fans didn’t seem too heartbroken across social media platforms over Bela’s passing. The Subreddit r/Gymnastics soon heated up with discussions of whether Karolyi’s demise should be a cause for sadness. “May he be completely forgotten and never revered again,” grunted one user, who made their sentiments on the matter abundantly clear. Gymnastics fans offer differing opinions on the icon
Comaneci went on X to send off the man who helped to achieve her iconic status. The Romanian legend wrote, “A big impact and influence in my life RIP Bela Karolyi,” in her social media update and shared several images of herself with her coach Karolyi. However, not everyone else shared her grief. Instead, one fan wrote X, “I will never have anything nice to say about him or his wife,” after highlighting how Bela came to the USA and did some horrible things to the gymnasts he trained over the years. Unsurprisingly, having Nassar in his camp also didn’t sit well with many people, despite the Karolyis claiming that they had no idea of the former doctor’s actions.
“That’s too bad…..so what’s the weather today?” wrote Redditor Careless-Middle 2203 in the comment section of the Subreddit group, underscoring their reluctance to give Karolyi much thought at all. On the other hand, one gymnastics fan on X acknowledged that the sport lost someone who was truly revered. “what a loss for the gymnastics community,” reads the comment by the fan.
