Carlos Yulo's mom drama—Is family trust a thing of the past in sports?

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Carlos Yulo won two gold medals and became the second Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz in Tokyo. He became a local celebrity and received 20 million pesos ($350,000) from the Philippine government and several gifts from local businesses. But all this was overshadowed by his personal life after he made some big accusations against his mother—Anjelica Yulo.

The gymnast claimed that his mother took away his prize money dating back to the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. “My mother had access to my accounts and my monthly sports allowance. When I finally got control of my accounts, I found out that she had taken money out,” Yulo said on TikTok. However, he has managed to find stability again. Following his Olympic triumph, he has been enjoying an influx of gifts, prize money, and brand deals, putting him back on solid ground.

Carlos Yulo recently spoke about his financial situation in a chat with Dyan Castillejo, ABS CBN’s Senior Sports Correspondent. He shared, “Well, even before the Olympics, I’ve already been helped get into open an account.”

He explained how when he returned home to the Philippines, his mind was all about prepping for the Olympics, so he didn’t want to stress over money. “It’s hard to keep up with it,” he noted, making it clear that staying focused on his training was his top priority.

But that’s not all—he shared how he discovered priority banking, which has been a total lifesaver. “I didn’t really know that they have priority banking and the service is really like, even though I didn’t signal like it anything, even if, I don’t care about it, I’m at peace now. I’m safe. Like nothing bad will happen to me. Someone is guiding me too,” he shared [Auto-generated translation on YouTube].

While he has forgiven his mother, their issue also includes Carlos Yulo’s girlfriend, Chloe San Jose. What had happened?

How Carlos Yulo lost his money to family drama…

When Yulo alleged that his mother had taken his money and had been handling it without his consent, Anjelica came forward with her own explanation. In an interview in August, she stated that she had transferred the money to her personal account to safeguard it for her son. However, their rift started when Anjelica got to know about his girlfriend, Chloe.

As per Yulo’s admission, his mother disapproved of his girlfriend because she had a liberal upbringing in Australia, and that his mother judged her on the basis of her clothes. He also stated that his mother felt San Jose would use him for money.

However, Yulo backed his girlfriend and called for his mother’s ‘healing’ and hoped they could move on from the issue.

On a similar note, Anjelica too was ready to drop the issue. “Our home is open, whether or not you have money, the door is open in case you want to come back,” she said.

After his killer Olympic performances, he has been showered with some huge gifts. We’re talking about a $414,000 three-bedroom condo and a $20,000 voucher for a department store.

Additionally, the country’s House of Representatives pledged 3 million pesos to him. But that increased to 6 million after he secured a second gold medal for his country and the amount is equivalent to about $103,511. If all this wasn’t enough, a local restaurant even offered him free ramen for life! All in all, the prizes and gifts he received amount to millions.
