Is the ruling against Jordan Chiles a fair call, or does it highlight flaws in the system?

Jordan Chiles was absolutely thrilled when she first celebrated her bronze medal in the women’s artistic floor exercise at the Olympics. However, that excitement quickly turned to disappointment when the Romanian gymnastics team challenged her final score, resulting in her being stripped of the medal. She described it as “one of the most challenging moments of my career.” In a heartfelt social media post, Chiles expressed her disbelief, saying, “I have no words.” Still, Team USA is determined to keep fighting for her bronze medal, showing that this battle is far from over.

After the news broke, Chiles announced she’d be stepping away from social media for her mental health. “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health. Thank you,” she wrote. It’s clear this loss hit her hard, but her Olympic teammates have been right by her side, showing that they’re all in the same boat. Suni Lee recently talked about how she supported Chiles during that tough time.

Recently, Yahoo Sports released a video featuring Caroline Fenton in conversation with Olympic gold medal gymnast Suni Lee about the support their teammate Jordan Chiles has received during her medal controversy. After Fenton observed that Chiles had to give back her bronze medal for the floor exercise due, to disputed rulings by the Court of Arbitration for Sport adjusting her score on the podium initially where she stood with it—she inquired of Lee how she and her fellow teammates had come together to support Chiles during this controversy?

Suni Lee expressed her feelings regarding Jordan Chiles’ circumstances, saying, “It’s very hard, especially being an athlete. You work your whole life for that, and it’s just crazy how it can be taken away from you.” She highlighted the significance of having support during challenging moments, saying, “I reached out to her almost every day just to make sure she was okay. I didn’t want to overdo it because I know how it is to be going through something and not want to hear from some people. So I just wanted to let her know that I had her back and that I was here if she needed anything.

Suni Lee has herself experienced difficulties as she was struggling with 2 incurable kidney diseases last year. This initially made her think that she wouldn’t be able to do gymnastics ever but everything changed when the doctor told her she could resume her training just 6 months before the Paris Olympics. Despite this setback, she successfully secured a spot, on the Olympic team. But, it was not just her who supported it, Simone Biles also did.

Simone Biles emphasized the importance of processing emotions, telling Jordan, “You have to feel all these feels. Don’t let these emotions stop you. This will be the healthiest way to get all of this out.” She mentioned that they have been having video calls and exchanging messages just to chat and catch up like girls do.

Jordan Chiles appeals to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland

Jordan Chiles is seeking justice from the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland to reverse the ruling that stripped her of her bronze medal in the women’s floor event at the Paris Games. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in favor of Romanian gymnast Ana Maria Barbosu in a dispute over Chiles’s score at the International Gymnastics Federation, a one-minute deadline for inquiries being missed by the U.S team by four seconds resulting in an impact, on Chiles’s score and pushing her out of the three positions.

In her plea, for reconsideration, Chile’s team has asserted that the CAS failed to take into account video evidence that unequivocally demonstrates that the inquiry was submitted within the time frame. There are also rising concerns about a conflict of interest because of Hamid Gharavi. He has been working as a Romania advisor, for a decade as well. Also, it was mentioned that Chiles was notified about the CAS hearing a few hours before it started which didn’t give her time to prepare for her defense.

Despite facing difficulties Chiles is still adamant as she is receiving support from USA Gymnastics and the U.S Olympic and Paralympic Committee. She expressed her disagreement with the CAS ruling as “unfair”. However, she is still prepared to confront this challenge head, saying that she believes ultimately “the people in control will do the right thing.” Well, the next 4 to 6 months will be crucial for Jordan Chiles as the decision from the is expected which she and fans believe will be in her favor.
