Leaving home for glory—Did Carlos Yulo's sacrifices pay off at the Paris Olympics?

Gymnast Carlos Yulo scripted history for the Philippines at the Paris Olympics. The 24-year-old became the first man from his nation to win Olympic gold in gymnastics. However, Carlos didn’t just stop at one, winning gold in the men’s floor and vault. The double gold medal solidified his position as the most successful gymnast in the history of the Philippines.

Thanks to his epic achievement, the gymnast has been shown much more than Olympic gold. The gymnast, who trained away from home in Japan under coach Munehiro Kugimiya since 2016, received a hero’s welcome. Now, Bretman Rock, a Filipino-American influence based in Hawaii, has given Caloy a more deserving nickname.

“Our king, the Filipino GOAT (Greatest of All Time) of the Olympics, Mr. Carlos Edriel Yulo,” Rock said on his podcast Da Baddest Radio on YouTube. The digital creator, who has 18.7 million followers on Instagram and is popular for making makeup tutorials and his humorous views on life, named the 24-year-old medalist as one of his dream podcast guests, alongside the undisputed GOAT Simone Biles and her teammate Sunisa Lee.

Bretman Rock was incredibly proud of what the Filipino gymnast had achieved. He also highlighted how the Philippines’ first double Olympic gold medalist would inspire the younger generation to get into gymnastics. However, Carlos Yulo continues to earn a lot more than new nicknames in his country. The Olympian was set to earn a combined 58 million pesos ($1,015,051).

Yet the gifts haven’t stopped flowing in light of his Olympic glory. He has already earned a $414,000, three-bedroom condo in Manila, and multiple cars.  Even small businesses have offered Yulo a lifetime supply of free food. Restaurants in Manila have offered the gymnast free baked mac n’ cheese and chicken inasal (Filipino dish) for the rest of his life.

Yulo isn’t keen on only taking from his nation. Bertman Rock suggested that his achievements would inspire a new generation. However, the first Southeast Asian male to become a world champion hopes to take a more direct approach to coaching.

While the Olympics are over, the 24-year-old is busier than ever. The celebrity athlete’s schedule is packed with events, ceremonies, and interviews. During one such GMA Integrated Interview on local news channel 24 Oras, the world champion said he wished to hold gymnastics clinics for kids. “Gusto ko rin ma-share ‘yung knowledge na natutunan ko po sa naging journey ko. And siyempre to have fun din po ‘yung mga bata, and ako na ma-enjoy ko yung pag-share ng naging journey ko po.”

Yulo shared in Filipino. It translates to, “I also want to be able to share the knowledge that I learned during my journey. And of course, the children will also have fun, and I will be able to enjoy sharing my journey.” The gifts and honors he received have changed the gymnast’s life and it’s time he gave back.

Carlos Yulo told host Pia Arcangel that he would love to share his gymnastics knowledge with the gymnasts. The Paris 2024 gold medalist will continue to prioritize his competitive career. However, he hopes the clinics will encourage young kids to give gymnastics a try. Who knows? Maybe one of his clinics will inspire a future Filipino Olympic medalist.

Senator Francis Tolentino is of the same opinion. On Thursday, the lawmaker gifted Yulo a brand-new SUV and praised the gymnast for his historic achievement. However, Tolentino also said that Yulo’s sense of discipline and dedication “should be emulated by the youth and aspiring athletes.” It seems Bretman Rock didn’t exaggerate when he gave Carlos his new nickname!
