For Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo, life hasn’t been without its setbacks. But for his girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, even more so. The history-making male gymnast from the country left his home at the tender age of 16 to pursue his Olympic dream. On the other hand, while Jose also had to do something similar, it wasn’t for something as ambitious as her beau. Instead, the decision had to be taken because of something much more heartbreaking.

Having to leave your home is never easy. However, the move becomes necessary at times when no other option can be used. And yet, it can continue being an emotional memory for most, and the gold medalist Olympian’s girlfriend can hardly forget hers.

Carlos Yulo’s girlfriend had to take a firm stand

San Jose recently appeared for an interview with Toni Gonzaga Studio to talk about the difficult things that life has made her go through. In the YouTube upload from October 6, Yulo’s base also talked about why she had to take the hard decision of leaving behind her home. She also revealed that the troublesome environment in her home led her to spend more time outside of it. “I really liked going to school. If I go to school, it means that I don’t have to spend time at home. So even on Saturdays. All the extracurricular activities, I wanted to do. So I won’t stay at home,” she said during the conversation with a stern face.

And yet, she couldn’t escape the storm at home that was brewing. An argument one day prompted her to hold her ground, claimed San Jose. “We were dining and suddenly got into an argument. And then they told me, ‘Just move out.’ It bursted,” she told her host without keeping a strong face on the outside. But it was the final straw.

“So then I went up to my room and decided to hide there. But they followed me to my room and kept on triggering me. I felt triggered then I packed my things into my backpack,” the national gymnastics star’s girlfriend said further. The scene was so chaotic, that San Jose, who was 18 at the time, couldn’t properly say goodbye to her younger sister. But soon, she found a shoulder to rely on, and they went ahead to take on the world together.

Carlos’ friction with his family exposed

After a successful campaign in Paris, Yulo became an overnight sensation in his home country. As the first-ever male gymnast from the Philippines to win a gold medal, Yulo was catapulted into a frenzy of fan admiration. Even the national government rushed to honor him, granting him everything from a lavish apartment in the heart of Manila to making his Olympic earnings tax-exempt. Despite all the respect and accolades, it was the controversial relationship between Yulo and his mother that shocked the world amidst his newfound fame.

“Apart from the incentives, my mom also had access to my bank account and my monthly allowances for gymnastics. When I finally got control of that bank account, I found out she had been draining it,” Yulo’s allegation sent a shockwave across the world and the gymnastics community. However, his mother defended her actions, claiming that she was only trying to protect her son. The situation escalated, prompting Filipino businessman Chavit Singson to offer to mediate the feud by promising the Yulo family 5 million pesos if they reconciled.
