Can Jordan Chiles' resilience inspire others facing political and personal setbacks?

Jordan Chiles’ 2024 season has been one that is riddled with heartbreak. But this time, her heartbreak has nothing to do with her performance or gymnastics. It is no news that the US presidential elections have been going on. And the world saw the Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump go head to head against the Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris. The elections were, as always, an exciting unveiling!

The counting began, and the number came out. It showed that the former president has yet another term in the White House. The win for Trump seems like an unfortunate moment for Jordan Chiles. Chiles is just returning from her Gold Over America Tour. She was on tour with her bestie and the queen of gymnastics, Simone Biles. The two-month tour hit 32 cities across the USA. The tour culminated on November 3rd with a performance for the ages. But the return home seems to have been not as happy as imagined.

As Jordan returns from the glitz and glam to the mundanity of reality, the results of the American elections awaited her. Jordan saw the results and went on to talk about the same. She took it to X and wrote, “Could things get any worse… I’m heartbroken… just WOW.” The reaction sounds like Jordan wasn’t Team Trump this election. Jordan even took it to Instagram to reshare one of Harris’ old pictures, followed by a story that read, “To women everywhere, you are the heartbeat of progress.” However, Jordan isn’t the only one that shares this emotion!

Even her gold-winning teammates from Paris, including Biles and Suni Lee, have supported Harris previously. Lee, in fact, took it to Instagram not so long ago and responded to one of Kamala Harris’ posts on her story. The post was one urging Americans to vote, and she even wrote, “Vote, Vote, Vote!!!!“. Unfortunately, it was heartbreak not just for Jordan but for the team. So what happens now?

Well, Donald Trump will return to the White House regardless of Chiles’ disappointment. Trump has already won crucial battleground states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia. As Trump gears up for his second term, the nation’s political landscape faces a shift, one that has clearly impacted Chiles. However, while the POTUS election might have broken her heart, there seems to be a bigger heartbreak that she needs to fight. The one she has been fighting since Paris!

While elections disappoint Chiles, she has bigger heartbreaks that “need (her) to fight”!

Have an interesting take?

While the political dismay might be sad for Jordan Chiles, she is, unfortunately, no stranger to painful moments. Her Paris Olympics moment was perhaps the worst of them all. As the world already knows, officials initially awarded Jordan the bronze in the floor exercise final. However, her moment of glory had a counterattack with a technical appeal from the Romanian Gymnastics Federation. This led to her medal being taken away. This was no simple loss for Chiles. It was the moment she realized that bureaucratic technicalities could challenge her dream at any moment.

Losing the medal Jordan trained for was hands down a bigger heartbreak. And dealing with it has not been easy; Chiles even went on to call it “devastating.” In a recent interview with CNN, Jordan even went on to say, “Things can be really hard in your life, and things may be stripped from you…you’re going to have to deal with that.” The Court ruled that her coach’s inquiry, which could have kept her bronze medal intact, was four seconds late. This minor timing discrepancy ultimately shifted her from third to fifth place. Talk about pain! But Jordan Chiles isn’t backing down. She still has more fight left in her!

Despite the lows, Chiles is fighting back. She and her legal team filed an appeal with the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. As Jordan herself puts it, “You need to fight for what you’re fighting for.” Right on, Chiles! It is evident that amidst all the heartbreak, Jordan Chiles is not stopping any time soon. She wishes to push forward and inspire young Black girls—to embrace their authenticity. May it be the Olympics or understanding political landscapes, Jordan is living by her word of authenticity. And her fans are here to remind her that sometimes the fight itself is worth it.
