Should the gymnastics community rally to support Jordan Chiles' mother for the Paris Olympics?

“Every moment that I watch Jordan is the most amazing moment as a mom,” Jordan Chiles‘ mother once said. Now imagine the mother not being able to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics. As far-fetched as it seems, it could come true.

Gine Chiles took to X to ask the gymnastics community for help. “Looking for tickets for Qualifications and Team Final. DM if you have info.”

But isn’t there a dedicated Athletes’ Friends and Family Ticketing Programme? Well, it exists, but it doesn’t seem to help Gina. According to the norms of the program, an athlete can purchase only two tickets per session he/she is performing in. However, for those competing in race walking, road cycling, shooting, and swimming, only one ticket is guaranteed per session. These restrictions have created a hindrance for many athletes’ friends and family, as even the ticket prices can burn a hole in the wallet.

The lowest tickets for the qualification events are priced at about $26 and range upwards of $100 as the tournament heads into its latter stages. On the other hand, to watch the artistic gymnastics finals, the minimum amount one has to pay is $109.20 while the front row seats are priced at $687.99. And even if an athlete’s family is ready to shed the amount, the huge rush for the tickets is making things complicated.

With the 2024 Paris Olympics just days away, Jordan Chiles is all set to make her second bid at gold on the big stage. However, if Gina Chiles doesn’t get the necessary help with regard to the tickets, the gymnast might have to compete without her loved ones at the venue.

But let us also backtrack to Chiles’ trials to understand why she needs extra support. Displaying her exquisite form, Jordan Chiles finished second on Day 1 with 56.400 points. At the end of Day 3, Chiles raked up 111.425 points to clinch the third position as well as punch her ticket to Paris. However, it has been a long road to the French capital for her.

In an interview with People magazine, she said, “After Tokyo, I didn’t think I was going to go for Paris.” Now that she is all set to prove herself at the big games, it would be a major upset if her family wasn’t in the stands to cheer for her. Regardless, the gymnast’s mentality is in the right place.

Jordan Chiles loves Wonder Woman and anything superhero-related. Do you know why? Her parents also told her and her siblings that they were superheroes. So succeeding in a sport where she could quite literally fly gave Chiles the evidence she needed. “Ooh, maybe I have a gift, too,” a young Jordan Chiles thought.

Chiles was only 11 when she reached the elite level. She made it to her first national team and international assignment when she was 12.

She knew she was different from her peers, but in the gym, she faced issues where she was taunted about being too muscular and not looking like a typical gymnast. But today, it is her strength that has helped her. “You’re telling me I’m not going to have muscles when I’m throwing my own weight around? … It’s like, God created this body for a reason, so I’m going to use it as much as I can.”
