Three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas had a couple of new-age Olympic gymnastics compatriots to surpass at the American Classic in Katy, Texas. Jade Carey, a fellow Olympic gold medalist, made her season debut after finishing her NCAA season a week ago. Both were joined by almost 90 female artistic athletes competing in the American Classic and Hopes Classic on April 26-27.

The tweet read, “jade carey winning her first AA gold in 2024 against *gabby douglas* is something i think 0 people on earth had on their bingo card!” Carey, who tied for runner-up with a near season-high all-around score at the NCAA Championships, flaunted her skills, including the double-twisting Yurchenko.
However, Douglas too astonished everyone with her performance of the Double Twist Yurchenko, upping the stakes for Carey at the American Classic today. Despite the difficulties, Carey emerged as a clear contender in the elite category, giving a sneak peek of her preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Season’s first scoreboard ranking for the gymnastics elites
Jade Carey solidified her position by claiming the all-around after executing the Yurchenko double twist on vault (14.200) which was a highlight of the day. While Tokyo Olympics all-around gold medalist Sunisa Lee earned the best score scoring 14.300 to take the balance beam title. Carey capped the all-around with a score of 55.000, followed by Myli Lew, the 2023 American Classic winner with a score of 53.900, closely followed by Marissa Neal with 53.050 points.

Despite failing to achieve her planned result, Gabby Douglas met the three-score criteria for the next Xfinity U.S. Championships (May 30- June 2), after tumbling on the floor and two falls on the uneven bars to finish in 10th place. While Douglas can get the all-around qualification score at the Core Hydration Classic on May 18.
23-year-old Carey surprisingly ended 15th in the all-around at the US championships. Recognizing the challenges of building routines, she made significant alterations. The Tokyo Olympics gold champion turned disappointment into motivation, honing her elite training while juggling her collegiate commitments at Oregon State University to keep her focus on the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
