Leanne Wong, the Blue High Valley graduate, could compete alongside Simone Biles at the recent World Gymnastics Championships. Besides, she also thanked her stars when placed in the 9-vaulters list, following Joscelyn Roberson’s leg injury. Wong, the second alternative, did a 10-second mindset switch after Roberson was rushed to the paramedics. Having said that, the 20-year-old gave a powerful vault performance thereafter.

US women’s team roster included greats like Biles, Shilese Jones, Skye Blakely and Joscelyn Roberson. The combined effort of all awarded them a team gold at the Worlds. In a recent interview with the popular Essentially Sports, Wong opened up on some take aways. Whether it is related to gymnastics or not, the 2021 World all-around silver medalist takes valuable lessons from her fellow US gymnasts.

In the exclusive of ES, the 20-year-old didn’t shy away from being forthrightly honest. When asked, “If there was one thing that you could take away from each Team USA member- gymnastics or non-gymnastics related, what would it be and why?“, the 2021 World floor bronze medalist spoke up. Bringing Biles up first, she said, “When traveling with a team to another country to train and compete, you get to know your teammates during the trip. Being on the trip with Simone Biles for the first time was an honor. It seems crazy to be on the same team as her when she already has so many accolades, World Championship Titles, and medals for Worlds and the Olympics. It was amazing to see how her experience in gymnastics and competing internationally shows under pressure.”

Further, she shed some light on her travelling experiences with the US women’s team. She said, “All of the team members had a funny side to them and it was fun to get to travel and compete with them, especially with Kayla, who is a Florida Gator, and Skye, who is also going to be a Gator.” Being a Florida Gator herself, she contributed to Florida’s SEC Championship title in the 2022-23 season. Along similar lines, she said, “I currently get to compete with both Blakely sisters, Skye when I?m with Team USA, and Skye?s older sister, Sloane, when I am in Florida.

Praising the Blakely sisters’ laughs, Wong concluded her answer. Besides mentioning the fun times she had on her gymnastic travels, she also shed light on a common chord.

When the word ‘twisties’ springs up, the only entity the world can think of is Simone Biles. In 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the 26-year-old sat out of the latter part of the competition, owing to her mid-air struggles. Along similar lines, Wong confessed to Essentially Sports, “I have had the ?Twisties? and they are a gymnast?s biggest nightmare. It can be a scary time of a gymnast?s career when they don?t feel like they have control over their body.” Like the 4X Olympic gold medalist took a 2-year hiatus to take it slow, Wong also went back to the basics and refrained from stressing over it.

Apart from a gymnastics routine failure, twisties can lead to serious injuries too. The 21-year-old Quest Nutrition partner, emerged stronger after her setbacks, only to secure accolades all the way. After her Worlds selction, she said, ?It?s truly an honor to be named to the 2023 World Championships team alongside the USA?s top artistic gymnasts.”
