If one wondered what drove her to make the bold move of withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the right answer would be her clarity of thought. Several critics were outraged by her decision and called her selfish for not putting the sport above her mental health issues. In fact, when Simone was in a relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Stacey Ervin, a gymnast and a professional wrestler, her statement in an interview clearly indicated that the sport was more important.
Simone Biles is a person of practical thought
Back in 2017, the 20-year-old, Simone Biles, made it official about dating Ervin. They found themselves as a perfect adventure; helping each other to come out of their comfort zones. Interestingly, they both are athletes and they were quite realistic about the challenges in their relationship. They were well aware of the fact that they wouldn’t have much time to dedicate to one another.
Also, they were open-minded about accepting the practical difficulties they would face, when she started her full-time training. In an interview, she said that the former national-team gymnast, Stacy Ervin, was an elite athlete, who had traveled a lot, and would understand it.
The Olympic gold medalist gymnast also emphasized that their priorities were clear and they respected them. “We already know in each other’s lives we don’t come first, and that’s okay with the both of us. So we do what we need to do, and then when we come together it’s fine,” she concluded.

After dating for three years, the couple called it quits in March 2020. She said, “It’s hard being young and having that long of a relationship and then ending it. But it was for the best.” Besides handling the break-up, Biles had another major change to cope with.
It was adjusting to the coronavirus quarantine routine. “I think for athletes, it’s hard for us to be out of our element for such a long period of time. That kind of throws your whole balance off,” Simone expressed. She said that going to work out meant releasing endorphins and that helped in bringing the anger out. She continued, “It’s kind of our oasis.” Without going to the gym, she felt stuck at home with her thoughts.
