23-year-old Australian gymnast Heath Thorpe has recently taken to his Twitter account to express his thoughts over Douglas’ recent situation. Reflecting significant sorrow, Thorpe stated that he was pained to know that Douglas could not perform today. He wrote, “No one talk to me I’m still mourning that we won’t get to watch Gabby today.”

Such a tweet from the gymnast garnered a lot of comments. Most of the fans agreed with Thorpe and stated that it was a shame Douglas had to miss out while being in such a fine form. However, looking at the silver lining amidst the dark cloud, a comment pointed out the fact that even though Douglas would be missing, watching Suni Lee would always be a treat to the eyes of all the fans.

Coming back to Douglas, the 28-year-old was scheduled to take part in the floor exercise, balance beam, and vault. In what would have been a dream face off, Douglas would have been pitted against Suni Lee, the first time in a senior level. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. In a recent update on Instagram, Douglas stated,I was so excited to get back out on the competition floor, but unfortunately, I just tested positive for covid… I’m crushed but I’ll see you guys soon! With still time left ahead of the Paris Olympics, Gabby Douglas is staring at a historic feat.

Douglas was a part of the historic team of the 2016 Olympics that won the gold. However, she was then found missing in action until the Paris Olympics knocked at her door. Douglas, who won her third gold at the Rio Olympics, had her first tryst with Olympic destiny four years back. Back in 2012, the 28-year-old clinched a double gold medal in London, one each in all-around and with the team.

Thus, after having a significantly triumphant couple of Olympics, the Paris Olympics would be her third appearance if she manages to qualify at all. If that does indeed happen, Douglas would have her name etched in history. As no female gymnast has ever made it to the Olympic team thrice after Dominique Dawes. Her compatriot, Simone Biles too, will be eyeing an identical record.
