Laurie Hernandez has won two Olympic gold medals and knows quite well the expectations that come with being a top gymnast. She could relate to all of the athletes competing at the U.S. Classic for a berth in the American Olympics team. But she was particularly impressed by Suni Lee?s performance in the wake of her kidney problems. Speaking about Lee, she commended the Hmong athlete for her ?perseverance?. Hernandez noted that Suni Lee had to abandon her thriving college career at Auburn University because of serious health problems.

During the interview, which was uploaded on the NBC Sports YouTube channel, Hernandez mentioned Suni Lee’s deepest thoughts saying, “She was questioning, can I come back and can I come back as strong as I was?”?

She emphasized that every athlete must give their body the break it deserves as Lee did. But Hernandez also added that it is a “really scary” thought for any athlete, herself included, to have to step away from their sport due to health issues. Hernandez said that Lee was “really proud of herself,” and it was evident in her demeanor.
